Default How to pick a keyword to do SEO for..?

I know the answer may seem obvious to this, i.e. go for a "high volume" keyword. But I must be missing something...

I recently backlinked the hell out of an article for a phrase that gets 30k+ searches a month. This article is averaging only about 10-15 views a day and even fewer clicks. It's ABOVE the fold for the keyword too, on the front page. How could this be? What am I missing? How do I avoid making this mistake again with another keyword?

Andrew

Hey Andrew . . . a few points to consider.

#1 - 30k searches / month is the same as 1k searches / day (so if you get 10 / day thats 1%. . . not too shabby, but for sure not stellar)

#2 - the #1 spot for the keyword gets CONSIDERABLE more traffic than the #2 spot and it goes down like a funnel from there.

#3 - Depending on which spot you are in (say #4, #5, #6) in some cases get less traffic than the #10 spot (due to scrolling / etc).

#4 - Your Title & Description might suck . . . a title & description is like a PPC ad, there are ways to write them better and make them receive better CTR's (this is a HUGE point most SEO's miss).

Anyway, thats my 2 cents.

I would say testing out bigger searched keywords and im sure with your experience with content writting you can add in a variety of long tail and short tail keywords in your articles and boost seo to where ever your linking to.

When i do a search in Google Adwords Keyword Tool, do i do a broad match ? i have been using broad match to understand the number of searches for the terms that come up. Is that precise? or do i have to use Phrase, Exact or Negative??

Google adword tool is giving out broad results. The problem is that they are not giving out correct results and this is a common problem that is heard from longer time. Still nothing has been done

Ya, You have to go to https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
There, you can type your keyword and check how many queries are made there, based on that you can pick your keywords. I think it helps

Normal mistake most of the seos do is just look at adwords data and register a domain with that name and wait for traffic. There are certain things which you should remember while working with adwords tool. Say for example "april fool" gets a huge number in adwords tool, but do you think someone would search for april fool in the month of december?

So, while using adwords tool, make sure you look for EXACT match followed by TRENDS, if the keyword is trended all over the year, that's great. You may also use google insight.
