Default How to select key words?

When finding a niche, the most recommended method is to go for key words that get a lot of searches but less search results. I recently found a report advising against it. It said to go for key words that already have a lot of content published. I'm a bit confused. Can you put this matter in to light?

It depends. There is probably a reason why these keywords come with low competition. Nobody is making any money there for instance.
Spy on the Adwords competition. Look for keywords with ads promoting the same product you intend to promote. Ads that seem to make a profit. Select the best keywords and make your website/webpage and backlinks. If 100 backlinks arenīt enough, make 200. But try to get on these searchpages one way or another. What good is it to rank No. 1 if nobody is buying anything there.

Choose keywords that are meeting your website content. That's the most important thing and it can bring you best results. Select some best keywords for every page.

Well it is not surprising that you would get different advice from different people because they don't all have the same strategy.

Some people go after highly competitive keywords because they know there is a lot of traffic and they spend the time and money to outcompete everyone else for high volume rewards. That's what I would call a "bigdog" type strategy.

Others just want to pick up easy "crumbs" and only target keywords that have less competition and therefore they have to do less work to rank highly for lower volume.

It's not a one-size fits all world. You have to decide just how you want to compete and then follow an appropriate strategy for THAT line of attack on the marketplace.

Itīs not only about search volume. These keywords must convert. If one would start a PPC campaign with long-tailed keywords probably only a few would be profitable. With PPC itīs easy to stop paying for non-profitable keywords. With SEO it takes some time and effort to get an article/webpage to rank in the first spots. If the keyword does not convert everything was for nothing.

When selecting keywords one should not only think in terms of competition and how easy it is to get to the first page. Conversion is even more important.
