Default Help making sense of wordtracker and google keyword tool

Hi, I need a little help making sense of the free keyword tool from Wordtracker and the Google keyword tool. Just when I think I’ve stumbled upon a great keyword in Google, Wordtracker shoots it down. A few minutes ago I found a great 2 word keyword in Google – at least I thought I did. Here are the stats from Google using a match type of “Phrase”:

Local search volume 5,400
Global search volume: 6,600

Then I did a broad search in Google for the keyword and there were only 323,000 matches. Now, I’m thinking this isn’t really that bad. 6,600 global searches a month should be about 200 searches a day, right? Well that’s what I thought. When I did a search in Wordtracker for the same keyword, it shows only 15 searches a day.

Who should I trust, and why doesn’t this make sense? Thanks.

I stopped relying on Wordtracker a long, long time ago. Their numbers just never matched the reality of my own testing. Besides, their numbers aren't based on Google.com anyhow.

Google is authority in this area. Wordtracker gets its data from second tier engines like dogpile that collectively represent about 1.5% of all searches. The search volume in WT is arbitrary. It is ok for comparing other keywords in WT but it is not a real search volume number like the Google KWT is. If you want to get accurate volume numbers use the Google KWT. Use WT for its sophisticated analysis features, but only use the numbers for comparison within WT results.

I'm really pissed off with word tracker! I wish I had come to warrior Forum before to be in the know. A waste of money.

You should trust google even though its free - also have a look at the

https://adwords.google.com/select/Tr...timatorSandbox

plug in your KWs to see what estimate of clicks you will get daily. What that means is that if you were to do an adwords campaign for your KW google will estimate how many clicks you are likely to receive being on the front page.

Its not 100% accurate its an estimate but better than nothing!

This is great news. I feel more comfortable now with my keyword searches in google. One of the main reasons I was concerned was because I've read that your keyword should have at least 100 daily searches in wordtracker. Thanks very much for your advice.

Thanks Shana_Adam for the link, and Steve and Peter for their thoughts. Can't believe I haven't seen this tool before. I think I'm going to remove wordtracker from my bookmarks :-)

yes do not sign up to wordtracker! Use your money to buy quality offers from here trust me!

Wordtracker is not good they only take 1.4% of search engine queries! From engines i have not even heard of!

The only good thing about word tracker is that you can research themes related to your KW - so it maybe useful for LSI purposes. Again the daily search results need to come from google not word tracker

Yes, all keyword tools, even Googles can be flawed. I always use exact match. This gives you isolated searches.

Also, you need to take into account the searches that are performed by the likes of us checking our rankings.... 5 times a day :-)

Funny, we never think of the simplest things. I must have searched for my own keyword 15 times today. I created some back links last night and wanted to see if my page rank improved. Makes me wonder how many other people are searching for the same keyword that are into Internet Marketing and SEO!

Hi FreshMedia,

I'm sorry to inform you, but you are using the wrong data from Google's AdWords Keyword Tool. You must select Exact in the match type selector if you want search volume for a particular keyword. You are likely to find that the Adwords Keyword Tool data is much closer to Wordtracker's, once you pull the correct data.

I am from the customer support team at KeywordDiscovery and I answer this question in regards to KeywordDiscovery.

The Google Keyword Tool may return a higher number of search counts, but note that these may be estimates and that these figures cover only searches performed through the Google search. Keyword Discovery's Global Premium database contain exact searches derived from panel data, and as a result is less prone to skew caused by automated agents. Search numbers should be used relative to other search terms in the same database and not as absolute figures, as we collect a sample of the searches performed world-wide.

Also note the number of keyword results (not search counts) as compared to Google's tool. Keyword Discovery's is much higher, as we cover many more search engines than just Google.

Google's Keyword Tool is actually designed for finding keywords to be used for Google Adwords advertising campaigns. Using it for any other form of keyword research may hold back your website's full potential.

Keyword Discovery provides the most advanced keyword research and analysis tool with incomparable features, including: multiple database options including Industry terms and language/regional databases and over 40 advanced features.
