Default .Info rankings- Ubran Legend or fact?

Is there any actual proof that a .info will not rank as well as other extensions?

Or is this just another IM urban legend?

This was posted last year but addresses your question:

Google Does Not Give Preference to .COM's over .INFO's or Other TLDs

Anyone else have a clue ?

I've ranked very high with some .info domains for competitive terms. So I think it's a myth.

I have several .info domains ranking on first page of Google, and I am definitely not alone.

Whether or not a .info can outrank a .com with content and similar backlinks is another
issue.

I have recently read online that nothing ranks better than .com, but there was no proof. I think it would be a good experiment to track two identical sites, one info and the other com.

It's only a myth.

However if you have choice for a domain where .com is already available then choose that over the .info

I have an info that I orginally purchased just to redirect to an affiliate offer, but about 8 months ago decided to build a wordpress blog on it instead.

It's in the get my ex back niche which as you know is highly saturated but I rank fairly well for some good long tails and make a few decent sales per month.

I think I've got around 40 or so posts on it, and have pointed a few ezinearticles at it as well so it has some backlinks.

I think that if you build some decent content and backlinks it'll work fine just like any other domain would.

It would make no sense for Google to devalue every website with an info just because they are well know for spammers using them.

It is not a myth. .com/net/org most definitely rank easier than .info. Say whatever you want, I've tested it with over 30 domains, and results are always the same.

The idea that any other TLD is really preferential as far as SEO goes is a myth as far as I'm concerned. Talking from experience, I've ranked reasonably well for a few different TLDs (including .me and .info) in the past, and the only factor really limiting me from reaching the top spots wasn't the TLD I was using but the number of backlinks I had.

I believe the reason why people are given the impression that .info's and .me's and other TLD's are less desirable as far as SEO goes is because people simply are deterred from spending too much effort into trying to rank highly with them against the unfounded advice of other people.

Just the same way people overlook adsense earnings potential because it's said to be dead, and don't do this and that because everyone else says it no longer works...

It is very easy to test this for yourself. Do a split test with 10 domains (5 keyword phrases).

You'll find that this forum is full of people quoting other people's ideas/advice (and that advice is almost always just something they've read somewhere lol). When confronted, they will argue to death to prove their "point". Fail all the way.

you can get a .info to rank on page one no problem - all you need is a high quality relevant and super SEO site - it's kind of a myth but you do need to work harder for a .info site

Of course you can get any domain to rank for any keyword phrase, providing you put in the work. That is not what the OP was asking.

Same backlinks, same amount of content, keyword rich domain... a .com/net/org will always outrank an identical .info.

If you've built more than a handful of websites it should be so obvious. Damn I'm so sick of all the speculation and useless advice from half brain dead "gurus".

I actually tested this 18 months ago which is a life time in SEO BUT at the time the .com domain out ranked the .info easily. In fact I found I needed about 3 times as many backlinks to get the .info close to the .com.

Not sure how it is now but I really can't see any reason to buy anything else than a .com for the sake of $5 or $6 it's hardly worth the risk

it depends on what you call high.. initially it wasn't in the top 20 the .com ranked #2 just on it's domain name which was keyword based. I eventually go the .info to around #5 but it took a fair bit of effort and backlinks.

I concluded that buying the .info would need me to spend more money getting it ranked that by what i saved.

Give it a test yourself. Find a niche and buy 2 keyword related domains one .info the other .com write 2 500 word keyword based articles with the same density of keywords in them and leave the sites for a week and see how they rank.

If the competition is under 20,000 the .com will probably rank in the top 5 immediatly with no promotion. I'd be surprised to see the .info on the first page.

Next start to get backlinks for the .info and see how many you need to get to the top 5.

It might be different now 18 months ago loads of people were churning out .info's with loads of poor quality content.
