Default Do domain names have significant impact? Can subdomains replace it?

I'm starting a number of project of different products and I'm wondering if domain names have a huge impact on SEO ranking.

My site layout is to just have one single generic domain name and have all the different products under different subdomain. Would this be good enough for SEO? How would it impact the website verus running each product under a domain name by itself?

A bit of info on site structure:-
The subdomains would point directly to the sales page of the product (e.g. eczema.greatproductsite.com) and the main domain name would be just a generic blog on products and affiliate marketing.

Each of the subdomains would also have a blog that is active (e.g. eczema.greatproductsite.com/blog) and it would be all social bookmarked.

I'm also planning on running adwords on each of these subdomain's sales pages and I am unsure if adwords cost has any relation to the name of the domain or subdomain name used and if there is a relation, would it be advised to use a good domain name instead of subdomains?

Thanks for anyone who can help me out on subdomains and domains for my new site.

Keyword rich domain names are a huge weapon in your SEO arsenal. The ideal thing would be for you to get domain names on each of your keywords. However, if you do not have the budget, your idea is also a good alternative to use keyword-rich subdomains

I've wondered about this method too, but wouldn't it be just as effective to use keyword directories instead?

e.g. greatproductsite.com/eczema instead of eczema.greatproductsite.com

I've searched without any luck finding an answer to this. The closest I came to an answer was something along the lines of: only use a subdomain if it's an entirely different server.
