Default Long Articles vs. Short Articles

Long or short articles - What is your preference for your websites and blogs? I've heard many people say that with people's short internet attention span that 400-500 words is the ideal length. However, I've had great results with articles 3000-4000 words long. With articles that long it is easy to naturally use several longtail keyword phrases without appearing to keyword stuff the article. I tend to get a lot of traffic to these articles even from people who didn't search for the main keyword phrase. In fact, with such long articles keyword combinations come up in searches that I didn't intend at all. Nothing wrong with a little bonus traffic. However, it could be argued that I'd be even further ahead writing 6 or 7 short articles rather than 1 long one. Has anyone tried both tactics? Which was more successful for you?

It sounds like you answered your own question. It is just more time effiecient to write 500 word articles and you get more blog posts by doing so but if you are having success with writing longer articles why not continue with that.

There is no right or wrong answer just whatever works.

I think shorter is better to a certain extent, rather than have one huge article you might think about making mini articles and talking about your subject in steps. But your article should be as big as it needs to be to relay the point.
