Default Category vs. Page for Backlinks?

On some of my sites I have pages set up with sub -pages. In this case I back link to each individual main page and the home page separately.
So I may have a home page and 10 pages I would try to get back links to each of the pages.

On other sites I have categories set up and I add posts to the categories and then I back link to the main category.

Am I doing this correctly?

What exactly is the difference between a category and a page on WP? It seems you can use them the same way.

Also if I link to particular pages is it effective to use the same keyword for a couple of them?

Thanks!
