I hope to help some of my fellow warriors out here. I know that a lot of you already know about this, but some don't. I screwed up. while checking out my back links for my website, I noticed that a lot of the good high PR sites were not showing up. So then I submitted my site again using www in front. And boom, there they were. So apparently while back linking, in the anchor text, I used www and just the site name on different sites. So now some of my links are on one and the rest are on the other. I feel like a dumb dumb. So stick with one format for all your links. http:// yoursite. com or http:// www.yoursite. com Hope this post is useful. |

You can mitigate the damage. Choose which version of the URL you prefer, tell Google about your choice (webmaster tools), and create a 301 redirect from the one you don't prefer to the one you do prefer. For details about how to do this, see these two recent threads: Steve |

The average person puts only 25% of his energy and ability into his work. The world takes off its hat to those who put in more than 50% of their capacity, and stands on its head for those few and far between souls who devote 100%. -Andrew Carnegie | |

Here are step-by-step instructions from a blog post I wrote for Search Engine Journal that shows you how to setup a redirect if you change domain names (also works with www versus plain http://) How to Change Your Domain While Keeping Your Search Engine Ranking |

It's probably not worth worrying about too much, between everybody making that mistake forever, name-based loadbalancing and people trying to game them google's gotten pretty good at figuring out intended canonalities.

I hate W W W. I always redirect w w w . domain to domain. I see no point in using w w w unless you have also other subdomains.

This is really a pretty common thing that very few people take care of upfront. Canonicalization issues are also associated with / vs /index, these too need to be redirected.
