If I am looking for long tail keywords for the main word "cooking" what is the best tool to use? Also, are there any free tools?

I use and love Micro Niche Finder, which has a cool "Dig" tool that will dig into any keyword to find a lot of longtails related to it. Highly recommended, but it does cost $97.

To go the free route, I'd use the Google Tool here: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

If you keep the "Use synonyms" box checked (it's checked by default), you'll get a list of related keywords and their stats, including a lot of longtails (usually).

Kind of depends on how saturated your niche is as well. Bottom line is that you've got to do some thinking as well about how you'd search for your own topic. Remember to include searches where common words like of, the etc are left out.

In my niche those are sometimes less optomized.

I noticed that most keyword suggestions on the Google keyword tool are only 2 or 3 words long. Where can I find the 4 or 5 word long tails?

More important to find is long tail words that are profitable. I am still testing Market Samurai which has revealed amazing things to me about profitable keywords.

Usually I would agree with you but on this site it is a non proft site that I am trying to rank for as many keywords as possible but profitable words mean nothing.

You can use free wordtracker tool at Free Keyword Suggestion Tool from Wordtracker to generate long tail keywords in your niche.

You also can use free wordtracker and google trend at Free GTrends Tool From Wordtracker for some additional info related to long tail keywords in your niche.

My advice is, use one of this tool and transfer the suggested keywords into Excel sheet.

Arrange all your keywords, number of searches, competition, KEI, etc side by side in your Excel sheet.

Once you have this. it will be very easy for you to choose the most profitable keywords to target.

The recent one that I purchased is very good and does KEI calculation for you too, as well as other great feature.

Are these search numbers on daily or monthly basis? I could not find the answer on site.

Hi Marhelper,

If you use wordtracker tool, the numbers are daily searches.

If you use Adwords Tool (as mentioned by others), the numbers are monthly searches.

A note when you use Adword Tool...don't forget to change the mtach type to 'exact' because by default, it is set to 'broad'.

Question: If I type in a keyword and it tells me that there is not enough data, does that mean that it is not a good keyword? Or not necessarily? This happens to me many times in the Google keyword trcking tool.

You are right. Those keywords not good to target on.

Normally people will choose the keywords with high number of searches and low number of competition.

The best measurement to use is a so-called Keyword Effectiveness Index (KEI), to compare 'profitability' value of keyword compared to another.

You can google it for better explanation.

In short, the higher the KEI value, the better.Cheers..

I would always find the google tool more reliable than others. Also, if you have money to spend I would recommend article samurai, its a great software

Each one for different reasons. But as for the "free" way but time consuming, would be good ole' elbow grease. And what I mean by that is check out Googles keyword tool, then start digging down and start bringing up competitors sites, explore Googles "options" link, also Googles Wonderwheel and so forth. Start and excel spreadsheet and really dig deep. Hopefully some of these ideas help.

The best keyword tool evar is Google ANALYTICS!

Start writing your posts about things you find interresting about cooking. Get the sites indexed and start seeing what keywords people use to find your site. Write a new post to rank for that keyword.

Whith this new post you get even more keywords. The cool thin is that Google thinks your site is about this keyword already. You are ranking with a post that is not written for the keyword.

The bad thing about google keywords is that there is not a lot of keywords that are tracked. People search for all sorts of things. Continue to study your keywords in google analytics and write posts around the keywords. These are YOUR keywords, as not 5000 marketers and big companies are competing to rank for them.

I agree that if you have data already coming in that Google Analytics can be very helpful.

I always use Google Keyword Tool. When you go to the page look for "How would you like to generate keyword ideas?" Click the website content and enter in one of the most popular sites in the cooking niche and click the 'Include other pages on my site linked from this URL' to see various relevant keywords.

The tip to use Google Analytics is valid, but you need to do some other legwork before you proceed:

1. Find the keywords GA is showing as the top visitor getters for your site.

2. Find out how many monthly searches are being conducted for that keyword by checking the Google tool: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

3. Search Google.com using that keyword without quotation marks around it and see where your site ranks.

If you already rank #1 for that keyword, then you're already getting as much organic traffic for it as you can. If you rank lower and are tempted to try to improve that ranking, factor in how many monthly searches are being done for it. If it's a small number, your time is better spent on keywords that get more searches.

What you have to remember is that around 50% of all searches every day on Google are totally unique. This means that there isn't a keyword tool in the world that can find long tails that have never been searched for.

A great technique for uncovering better long tails is to use your own stats and Google analytics.

1. Research some good long tails given to you by the Google keyword tool plus any brainstorming that you come up with.
2. Check competitors webpages for some good long tails.
3. Include those long tails in your own content, get indexed and wait for the traffic.
4. Check your stats and analytics for any new long tails that are getting traffic and include those in new content.
5. If you set up your analytics to see which keywords lead to conversions or goals then you can then use these keywords as the basis of new content.

This is a great feedback loop that will build your website's success over time.
