First...Hi all...i'm the bright and shiney new guy.

Now, my question. I read quotes like this...and I believe them (at least in spirit)...but where is this coming from. Is this documented somewhere by google...or yahoo?

It seems that there are some factors that are made public and some that are not (we've all read this)...but is the weight attached to these factors ever documented or are these claims based on empirical evidence.

Does my question make sense?

...Apparently, it means a heck of a lot.

For a keyword I'm currently trying to rank for, I'm outranked by a website
that zero links and zero content - just a blank white page with a short
message that says "Coming Soon!"

But the domain name is the exact keyword.

So, apparently, it matters a lot.

All the best,

Not important by itself.

It`s only an indicator to SE`s when they don`t know anything else about your site. No doubt it does help but not as much as you`d think.

Other thing, like a few good backlinks could turn water.com in to wine.com.

When SE`s started they were pretty dumb and site names mattered and along with the vanity aspect of owning a good named .com fueled the idea that it was important (marketing).

It`s usually no problem to get your domain with keywords, just be imaginative and add a word or two extra. Best- Tasty- Classical- Strong- Fragrant-Wine.com

Domain name is very important.

To believe it, try to search for anything and see how many .info domains you see on the first page. None, or one or two, depending on the niche.

Same thing with the keyword in the domain.

If you're looking at Google, keyword in your domain can help a little bit if all other things are equal, its just not as important. The quality of links pointing to your site plays a much bigger part in your overall SEO efforts.

One advantage though of having your kw in your domain is that when other sites link to you, you'll get the benefit of the kw as an anchor text link.

Hope it helps!

It's an advantage in certain circumstances but is just a small part of the bigger picture. If you are selling a single product or targeting a small niche then it is a good idea to have your keywords in your domain.
