Default Getting edu and gov Backlinks. The Holy Grail Of Linking.

This may be old news to some of you, but it was a real "Doh" moment for me.

.edu and .gov backlinks are heavily weighted by Google, even though they will deny it. They're also very difficult to get. I found a little trick that lets you get legitimate .edu and .gov backlinks and it's so simple, I'm surprised I haven't seen this anywhere before.

Colleges and universities have blog sites for their professors, just like anywhere else. You can find them by going to Google and doing a search:

site:.edu inurl:blog “keyword relating to your website”

or

site:.gov inurl:blog “keyword relating to your website”

From there you just go to the sites you find and comment on the blog post, just like always. Most sites will let you add html tags in the comment body or at least in your name. The ones I've been using asked for a url and tagged my name automatically.

Be warned, though, the comments MUST be honest, content filled comments with no spam or promotion. You have to actually read the article and know what you're talking about in order to get the comment approved.

By doing this, you'll get some good, solid .edu and .gov backlinks and Google just eats that up.

Very slow tactic simply because its hard to find .gov and .edu sites that accept comments, posts or anything that includes a backlink, however it does work!

Its actually one of the bonuses in my wso and no it isn't talked about alot your right but they are golden and heavily weighted by google because of their PR, domain extention and domain age!

Heck if an educational or government body promoted you then i think people would listen too and that's the same with google

Good luck with your .edu and .gov backlink hunting!

Ah tom i thought i would see you here! It's your sort of thing ha ha....

Anyhow rbr451 i would suggest you get Tom's wso (top signature link) which covered a range of strategy's to get .edu and .gov links alot easier than this method! Ive used it to build a list of sites that i use everytime i want some extra backlink juice to get my sites up to the top.

Great tip though so thanks, im sure it will come in handy for alot of people here.

Go to a city council meeting and ask for 5 minutes to introduce yourself and your business to the board. They are generally recorded and then transcribed to text and put on websites. Make sure you spell out your primary business URL including the HTTP so the transcriber can get it right.

It's very easy if you live in a small town.

I've done this with success.

Wow that is actually a really cool method!

Probably not for everyone but definatly worth looking at if your not trying to push a colon cleaner or acai product LOL, can't see that going down very well!

Tom Brite

P.S. Thanks for the mention Constatine! It's always good to hear from my customers especially when they are actually reccomending my products!

Yeah, they might misinterpret your statement, "I sell colon cleansing products" as "I am running against you for your office."

Link building is one of the most important aspects of an internet marketing strategy. Gaining .edu and .gov backlinks to a website using this method is a tedious exercise but the positive results that you are surely going to see make the effort more than worthwhile. IMO, Tom's WSO comes in handy here.

Thanks Constantine and Tom for pointing me to Tom's WSO. I'll have to check it out. I haven't been looking into .gov and .edu links before, so this was my first experience. Yes, it is a little tedious. It took about half an hour to post 2 comments, but it opened my eyes to the possibilities. I had always passed those links by as being out of reach. Lesson learned... Don't disqualify anything without proper research.

That's a great idea. I live in a small town and am on the board of the local Community TV station. It's website is attached to the city's site. Hmmmm, the possibilities!

Gotto go look up Tom's WSO now.

Instead of searching it yourself in google and then trying to see each page's rank and whether you can comment or not, you can just use some software (like Backlinks Generator PR) to do the work for you. Backlink builder is available online for free. I was able to find hundreds of sites PR5+ to comment on very easily with just a few clicks.

I personally think that in the end you have to invest (money or time) in building quality content for your site and also articles which will build the backlinks for you continuously over time (when people use your articles). Doing manual commenting one by one is tedious, may not be permanent, and can only carry you so far.

In a recent interview Matt Cutts said this:

Matt Cutts: Typically, our policy is: a link is a link, is a link; wherever that link's worth is, that is the worth that we give it. Some people ask about links from DMOZ, links from .edu or links from .gov, and they say: "Isn't there some sort of boost? Isn't a link better if it comes from a .edu?" The short answer is: no, it is not. It is just .edu links tend to have higher PageRank, because more people link to .edu's or .gov's.

I also deny it. So far, no one has been able to produce for me any compelling evidence that Google gives added weight to .edu and .gov domains. They get extra juice simply because of their very nature, Google doesn't have to "boost" them at all.

You can expand upon that google operator you posted and filter out all the useless sites and end up with pure .edu/.gov sites that are open to comments and links and are dofollow.
