One of my sites, which is about six months old, has been showing up as number three or four on the first page of Google search results for about three months, but it seems to disappear and then reappear every few weeks. It will be nowhere in the first ten pages of results for several days, then it magically reappears again, back at number three or four on the first page of results. I was just wondering, is this kind of thing typical? This site has actually started making some money and holy cowski, does it take a hit during the "disappeared" periods. :-( |

This is called the Google dance, and it is typical of sites when they first make it onto page one. I have a site that was up to #7 then down to #19 and back again. To my knowledge this goes on for a while until the site becomes established and if it has the quality and juice etc stays on page one. What is different in your case is that it was there for 3 months then started the google dance. I would undertake a slow but steady link building programme if you are not already doing it. I would also look at your bounce rate and time on site and try to improve them, anything to make it stick. Are you paying attention to the other top ranking sites? Are they doing the same thing? |

| >Are you paying attention to the other top ranking sites? Are they doing the same thing? Yes, they are, kind of. The top two are mega authority sites that it's going to be just about impossible for anyone to beat, and they remain steady. But I've noticed a couple of other sites seem to disappear and reappear too (but not at the same times that mine does). Whatever dance Google is doing right now, I'm liking it for the moment anyhow. :-) That site has reappeared and another site seems to have moved from #12 to #7. Odd though, it did that disappearing thing maybe once and then never since. |

It's the Google dance all right. Rightfully it should settle after some time. If it continues it could mean that there's just too much competition for your keyword. You should do more backlink building. The key is to do consistent backlink building.
