Default Keywords - More than one in post title?

I have a quick question about the number of keywords that can effectively be put into one blog post title.

Let's say the main keyword for a blog site is something like 'frisbee catching' and the site also has a main category for posts called 'frisbee catching'. Now, what if one of the posts in this category was for a sub-topic and related keyword such as 'backhand catch'. Assuming the secondary keyword was also one that was worthwhile to be ranking for, what would be the best title for this post ?

'backhand catch'

or

'frisbee catching - backhand catch'

Would the first option be best because the 'frisbee catching' category would help rank for that keyword, and the 'backhand catch' title would help to separately rank for the second keyword? Or would the second one be best because it is still targeting the main keyword, 'frisbee catching', plus picking up a little extra for the second keyword...

Other questions to follow-on from this would be which of the two keywords would be better to emphasise (e.g by bolding, italics etc.) in the text itself (main keyword? Second keyword? both??)

And also how should the tags be used? As many as possible including the catregory keyword?

Hope you can help!

I guess it depends on the competition of the particular keyword.

In reply of your first question-
Long title having secondary keyword as well, will be a good idea

And second question,
Bold tag works for better rankings on SERP, you should use this tag for your primary and then secondary keywords. Dont forget to use proper H1,H2, H3 tags writing formatting your post.

Hi sjohn - thanks for the reply. Yes I think the competition of the keywords is certainly important. I'm thinking along the lines that the main keyword has been selected because it generates good traffic and has a low number of competing websites.

The second keywords have much higher competition but still might pick up a few hits here and there. Nice to have but not essential. What I'm wondering is whether putting both in a post title will have a SEO benefit or will actually screw the optimisation up...

Thanks for this tip andrewaff. I think I will bold keywords more now and will explore my use of the heading tags.

Cheers

use tittle with format : "first keyword | second keyword | tittle"

e.g :
'frisbee catching | backhand catch | how to bla bla bla '

and for the tags, just use 2 or 3 long tail keywords, exclude the category (means, don't repeat the keyword that you used in category into tags).

do you use WP ?, WP AIO plugin can help you much if you do use WP.

Hi dxFactor and thanks for the reply,

Do you mean use the whole lot: 'frisbee catching | backhand catch | how to bla bla bla ' just for the post title?

I've kind of gone down the route of the main keyword |secondary keyword for each of my posts and have kept bolding the main keyword here and there in the body of the post itself. For tags I researched the secondary keyword and bundled in 10 or so other keyword phrases plus the main category keyword (is this not a good idea...?)

I'm guessing that my blog now has many pages as every tag will open in a new page each with a unique url. I'm a little worried that this will flag up duplicate content though, as some pages will have just one identical post...

I am using wordpress but via wordpress direct so don't if this is compatible with the AIO plugin. what does this plugin do?

Thanks for your help

I don't think getting repeated keyword in title will do any harm, instead, it will be more helpful in terms of SEO, is it?

Thanks Ken - I checked out your signature link as suggested and found the info useful. Two keywords it is then!

Repeating will not harm as long as it's <35% of the total number of words. Otherwise it might be thought to be spam.

Thanks,
Gilad.

Hi Giliav,

If I have a post which is the only one with a a particular tag then it will produce two pages with identical content on my site: one for the post itself, and another for the tag word.

Would this be a problem from an SEO perspective..? I'm new to all thisso may be I'm barking up the wrong tree
