Default How to Move your site up in Google

Hello Ladies and gentlemen

I have a few sites that are indexed for my main keyword on the first page of Google. Once your site has been indexed what is the best way to move your site up in the search results? Currently I have two websites that are in position Five and six I have been building back links for a while now I still I don’t see a change in the position. Maybe I am just being impatient, how long does it take for back links to take affect? I am unsure.

There are too many variables to give an accurate answer, although remember that your position will depend (amongst other factors on):

1) The quality of the backlinks you have (including the anchor text of those backlinks)

2) The backlinks and pagerank of the other websites in page 1 of the SERPs

3) Your on-page SEO

4) How many web-pages are indexed for the keyword (i.e your competition)

etc.

If you haven't already, consider writing articles to get backlinks (via the "About author" resource box). This is another good way of getting good quality backlinks.

To answer your final question, backlinks can take weeks or sometimes a month to take effect.

Certain actions - including on-page optimisation attempts - can cause the opposite effect to that intended especially if you have good ranking already, so beware.

yeah, agree with samuelbell, slowly build content and links and google will think that your website is "natural" and will give it a go-ahead to go higher.

Build links
Build quality links
Build links with a variety of natural looking anchor text
oh yeah, build more links

If you want to get an idea of how much work it will be to move up, either go to nichewatch.com or run some allinanchor and allintitle searches to see how you are stacked up in terms of title and anchor text from your links.

Sometimes you just hit a wall and it takes concentrated, sustained effort to break through to the next level.

Time. I have sites I've done NOTHING with - except chose great keywords and they are in number 2 and 3 on Google. Time is one of the biggest factors with these.

I have also had sites go straight to the number one spot right after being indexed. That’s why these two sites are bugging me, they seem to be stuck.

Thanks for your help warrior's

When I am building back links apart from social bookmarking do the sites I leave back links on have to be related to the info on my site? Say if my site is about swimming, can I only leave back links on swimming related sites?

It also depends who is in FRONT of you. These are your real competitors.

Make sure you have the "SEO For Firefox" plugin when you search Google, and set it so it shows you things like...

PageRank
Age (of domain)
Yahoo! Links
Yahoo! Page Links (how many backlinks to that specific page)

When you do a Google search with this plug-in (and the right settings), you'll get all of this information.

So if you're at #5 and you have 50 backlinks, and #4 has 500 backlinks, then that's one clue why they're at #4 and you're at #5.

Of course, with regard to backlinks it also depends on the quality, i.e. they say 10 high PR backlinks (especially without "nofollow") are better than 100 backlinks with little or no PR.

Plus, backlinks are by no means the only factor in determining rank. But at least by having all this information, you get a better idea of what you need to do in order to beat the #4 spot.

Like what everyone have said: Backlinks, Time, Site Optimization.

For backlinks, again, quality > quantity. However, do note that a MINIMUM quantity is also required (you don't want to lose out too much to a competitor too).

I fully agree with Paul Hancox's above suggestion too.

And it takes some time to rise in SERPs too..especially if your competition is high. So be patient!

Also, make sure your basic site optimization is there: title tags, meta tags, keyword density in your pages, etc.

If you already done on page optimization, then backlinks is all you need to get "high"..! Just keep building more backlinks and you should be rank higher in no time!

As far s you are on 5/6 places, that is great, however keep on getting quality links, As well as try with social bookmarking for quicker increment in SERP.
