I am finding that virtually every keyword that I research using the Google external tool and the sktool is giving me wildly different monthly search volume between them. The external tool always gives a much higher monthly search volume than the sktool. For example if you enter “ps3 hdmi cable” into https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal you will get global monthly search volume of 110,000 whereas if you enter the same keyword in Search-based keyword tool you get 2300 monthly searches. According to Google: “You may also notice that some of the data (like such as the monthly search volume) may vary slightly between the two tools, which is due to different methods of calculation at this time.” I would not call that a slight variation ! This happens with virtually every keyword I enter. So which tool do you believe or am I missing something? -Wal |

If I'm not mistaken the adwords tool includes the Google content networks were the other just includes Google's search. Can anyone verify this? |

Use the keyword tool but be sure to sort by broad/exact/phrase match...this is probably why your results vary so widely

Change match to exact type on Google adwords keyword tool. Same example changes to 14800 doing this. |

Hi Wal, These tools are showing you different sets of data. You can compile data many different ways. The AdWords Keyword tool shows you local searches from a recent individual month based on language and geotargeting as well as average monthly global volume over a 12 month period, while the sktool shows you the average monthly volume of local searches over a 12 month period. How does the Search-based Keyword Tool differ from the Keyword Tool in AdWords? - Search-based Keyword Tool Help |
