Default What is the best SEO plan for a brand new site?

Does anyone know of an ebook or site that would show one how to deal with a new site, in regards to SEO?

I will be starting a new site and I want to do everything right from the beginning this time, SEO wise that is, ie link building, content, etc.

I just want to know things like: how long I should wait before doing anything (if I should wait at all). Should I only link from related sites in the beginning?

I want to look like a perfect site (or near perfect) in the eyes of google and the other search engines.

Ashley

Hi Ashley,

The best place to start is with the basics. Google has published a SEO starter Guide that lists the best practices used by Google insiders:

Search engines need to be notified that a new site exists and is ready for their crawlers to come dig through the code. This simple task of having a spider spend 1.4 seconds on your site takes 6-9 months longer than most clients expect or want to hear. There are some ways to lessen the time to have your new site seeded and cached, but overall a safe assumption is that it will take at least 8 weeks to even have your site crawled for the first time.

You must go through the Google Webmaster Guidelines thoroughly before you initiate with the SEO plan for your website.

I think for a brand new site, the most important thing is to get try and get a good reputation in the eyes of Google. Yes, the mechanics of SEO plays an important role when determining site's rankings on search engines, but reputation is more important.

I will suggest you add content to your site consistently everyday. The content can be in the form of articles, press releases or blog posts.

Of course, another thing you will want to do is to alert Google and other search engines about your new site. Once your site is live, submit a sitemap.xml to Google and book mark your sites at major social book marking sites like Digg and Reddit.

At the same time, you can start building links by commenting on other people blogs (don't spam...), submitting articles to article directories like EZA, and listing your website on directory like Yahoo and DMOZ.

This is not true at all. You can have a site crawled and indexed in a matter of hours and there are plenty of ways to go about doing so.

Also, it terms of a "You can't go wrong" strategy, collect links from relevant sites. You can do this by visiting the sites, getting an email, and contacting them about doing an exchange.

Thanks for all the help.

It seems it is about the same for any site. I thought that seeing as it was a brand new site, some precautions would need to be in place.

I think the I will add content daily like one of you said, then bookmark some of those. And then slowly build up links and content over time.

I just didnt want to start off with google hating my site! This is a brand site, so I cant just spam the hell out of it. I need to have credibility and be totally white hat.

Well I am off to google webmasters to get a lesson!

Thanks
