Yes, the ALT tag is certainly used in the indexing algorithm.

At least it is at Google, according to Matt Cutts.

Absolutely.... I get a lot of traffic from images. Also your naming conventions for your images help a lot. Instead of image1.jpg, blue-widget-1.jpg should be used..

alt tag is one of the seo factors and it enhances the theme of your site so don't think it's not important and too time consuming to do it.

u should also think of naming the image file right instead of just img3434.jpg, name it with the targeted keywords.

my 2 cents.

This generates good traffic as well and you can rank higher pretty easily for image searches because of using proper and relevant keyword for the image.. I rank on 1st position for search engine logos keyword in image search..

I think through alt text(with keywords) you can justify the purpose of that particular image in front of search engines.

And, they're a great way to increase the keyword density on your page without screwing up the wording of your text.

As an experiment I made a non-nude celeb site based around the concept of 'celeb-name-nude' or 'celeb-name-naked' in the pics ALT tab. In about 6 months time I was averaging 20k uniques a month off of it, but never found a good way to monetize it. In a word, yes it's important.

Use the image title tags as well.
