It's not illegal, as long as the real domain isn't a TMed domain. For example if you purchased Mikrosoft.com (an obvious typo of microsoft.com), that'd be illegal. But simply registering, say, CellPhines.com (typo of CellPhones.com) would be fine. So yeah, there's nothing inherently illegal about the general idea of regging a typo domain. Of course, before you do this also check that it is getting enough global searches (Via google keywords tool), otherwise the domain may not get much traffic about you SEO it and all. |

I agree finding good typos is a whole internet genre on its own. It is not easy to find good and common typo domains. When you find a good one they are often quite expensive. Again as the above mentioned. Stay away from buying company name typos. |

If the domain name you are targeting is a non-generic term, it IS illegal and WILL get you into hot water. So, in other words, if it is something else than a dictionary word, it IS illegal and violates copyright law. The person that first uses a certain term for business can always claim that as a trademark. You will have to ask a lawyer for all the details. But as far as I know ONE trademark or copyright violation can cost up to $150,000 per infringement. So, I would stay away from that. It is just not worth the few pennies that you could make with adsense. |
