Default Now here's a question for you.....

I'm working through my keywords....

I have a problem.....

I have established the number of local searches per month for each keyword using the google keyword tool.

Now, in order to calculate a KEI by keyword, I obviously need to determine exact number of competing websites.

Question:-

Do I...

1. Use the allintitle:"keyword" search
2. Use a generic search - keyword
3. Use a generic search with speech marks - "keyword"

Please, please, please HELP

Cheers
Martin

To save time, what you should do is analyse the front page of cometition. See this video I made.

I want a good keyword researcher, not for min sites but for tech articles. Hit me up if you've got those skillz!

This is great stuff - cheers Mark.

I'm totally with you when you say that the first 10 results are your competition BUT if I have a list of (say) 100 keywords, I still need to perform some form of research to determine which keywords I'll choose for the site.

So, I know the number of searches per month but what 'standard' measurement should I use for the number of competing websites just for the purposes of this KEI exercise?

Is it allintitle:"keyword", "keyword", or.....keyword

Cheers
Martin

I don't even use that anymore. I just anlayse the front page. Try my best to beat the content then start doing some search engine optimization.

You'll thank yourself for it if you do it this way.

nice one Mark. So what's your strategy?

type in keyword
Check front page
Research all urls on front page
For each URL, check...

Title
Meta Description
Keywords
Image Titles
Anchor text links
Bold / Strong Tags
Italic / Emphasis Tags
Inbound Links
H1 - H6

Anything else?

Cheers
Martin

I go for this.

Look on front page.. if there are any web 2.0 properties at all, then I don't do much research except for backlinks.

When there are websites and no Web 2.0 properties I analyse the top 5 and see what they are packing under the hood.

If they've got too much content for those particular keywords, like pages and pages of it, I move onto the next keyword.

What I have bolded is a little unessecary, although it is good to know why the sites rank the top (thus checking internal strcutre is always good).

okay cool, couple of quick questions mate....

1. when you say web 2.0 properties, what exactly do you mean?
2. After you've identified which websites are linking to that particular page, what do you do then? Ask the same websites to link to your page?

Sorry Mark, you're gonna have to humour me, I'm a relative newbie!

Cheers
Martin

Well, how I get my backlinks is my own little thing. I have 90 websites that I visit often. I keep my links to those 90 sites only and get rankings with them. (although when I see where a competitor is - I follow).

Web 2.0 properties are things like ezine articles, goarticles etc.
