Default link directories

Hi everyone, I have been contemplating starting a link directory which l feel is a genuinely good idea for creating a little income from webmasters adding their urls to a directory. Firstly do you think this is a good idea or not? Secondly does anyone know of a free directory script they could recommend. And lastly because l am not able to understand how to install the script would anyone be able to help me on this subject?
This would be much appreciated and help me to further understand the ins and outs of this type of venture.Thank You

Hi OS,

I hate to ever be a voice of discouragement but Google hates these paid link directories (check out Matt Cutts over at the Google Webmaster section of YouTube) and views them as spamfests.

There are also already tons of them out there.

Keep looking, thinking and trying though!

Thanks Terry, but it would only be an option no obligation to pay. Basically it would be to add websites for free, not pay. this would only be if they wanted to have a premium spot. Really just want to make it a free directory submission. Do you have any more thoughts on this matter. I understand google stuff and it seems to me that they are just making it so hard for webmasters out there.
Like they are trying to control everything which is unfair in my mind. They should concentrate more on not letting websites through the gate that are purely scammers. Don't you agree. But that's another story.

I think unless you have a high PR directory, you don't see much income from it ??

Why not start an article directory instead? but the page rank and attract more people to use it, then monetize with adsense and paid services like Ezinearticles? Just a suggestion...

Thanks KK, l had thought about it but once again, preferably l need to find a free script where someone can help me to install it to my server ( if this is the needed). I have no idea of the tech side of these applications. If you could help me KK, l would be so grateful.

Hi all, just thought l would let you know that l have an article directory now and is doing really well. After the replies l received, decided to go with the article directory, simply because the information through articles and the knowledge one can gain is tremendous. Thanks to all those that gave me the insight, into this issue l once had.
Thanks again

Over the years thousands of link directories have been popping up...Google has lately filtered out lots of these directories as their quality has been fairly low (accepting all sites without any editorial control) and not giving them so much credit anymore...I would say its not a long term strategy starting a directory biz...My 2 cents...

Like any other business, online or off, the directory business is not easy.

There are so many worthless directories out there now that offer no value to visitors or webmasters.

Unless you have some understanding of the business, and have an idea to create something truely unique, I would advise against it.

HeDir.com ranks #1 or #2 for "human edited directory"

DebtPlan.org ranks #3 for "debt consolidation california"
