Default Quality Score update frequency

Hi,

I have a keyword with really low quality score: 2/10. So bad Google won't show my ad, lol.

I have been making some small changes to the landing page to see how it improves it. So far I've modified the title, keywords, and desciption meta tags to match the keyword to see what happens. The quality score hasn't changed.

My question is, when does Google update that score? Do they do it every day, once a week, once a month? Or is there no real way to know?

Thanks,

Daniel

hi Daniel,

There a number of different factors that can cause a low QS. Landing page issues make up a small proportion of the overall QS. Your changes seem to focus on a landing page relevancy issue, have you used the diagnostic tools to narrow the problem down to a relevance issue?

If the QS started out low then you may be on the right track, however if the QS was higher and then dropped, your issue is more likely a poor CTR. If it's a CTR issue then you will need to generate 1000 impressions before it is reevaluated. You will likely need to increase your bid to get impressions going again. If it's a keyword/ad text/landing page relevancy issue you will need to wait a few days until they refresh the cache for your page.

Try using the AdWords Keyword tool from within your account to evaluate the page, this may prompt a refresh of the cache. It will also show you which keywords have the highest relevancy, keywords are sorted in order of relevancy.

Hi Don,

Thanks for the info.

In this case, the quality score started out as 2/10 from the beginning. The ad I wrote matches the keyword, so I assumed the only other problem would be the landing page.

When I click in the status column though, it pop's up a window with this information:

<LI class="aw-i-list-li aw-popup-status-description-li">Keyword relevance: Poor
<LI class="aw-i-list-li aw-popup-status-description-li">Landing page quality: No problems
<LI class="aw-i-list-li aw-popup-status-description-li">Landing page load time: No problems

I had assumed that the Keyword Relevance is talking about the relevance of the keyword to the landing page. Does anyone know what that really means?

Thanks,

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Are you using the exact keyword in your ad text and is that same keyword on your Landing Page?

If you are using the keyword in your ad text and landing page, you should run the keyword in the AdWords Keyword tool to see if a lot of suggestions come up that aren't extremely relevant to your keyword. Some keywords are just too broad and can never earn a good quality score. You may need to stick with longer versions of the keyword that better defines the searchers intent.

I was just about to post a thread with the same question.

My quality score started out 7/10 and today it is down to 3/10 and my ads are not showing. I do have a very low ctr and maybe thats what happened. Another thing I notice is that Everyday the bid to be on the first page goes higher. How can that be? Jumping from 1.20 yesterday to be on page 1 to 2.20 today.

Cheers

Poor keyword relevance means you are using keywords that have nothing to do with your page.

Example, you are selling refrigerators. Your landing page is about brand X refrigerator. Yet, you have keywords like "stove" or "dishwasher". Maybe you have keywords like "brand y" which also sells refrigerators but Google doesn't know that. Best to bid on "brand y refrigerator" but your conversion may not be good.

Jan, if your click rate drops, the QS drops too. This will increase the minimum to be on page one. That's the price you pay for poor quality.
