Wordpress Blogs and SEO

I'm new to using wordpress blogs and would like your advice on some topics.
Firstly what are permalinks on wordpress blogs and does it help with SEO.

Also is it possible to create keyword and description metatags like you can on normal websites for SEO.

And are there any other tips on SEO that will help on wordpress blogs.

Hi there, permalinks are keyword loaded URLs, for example: yoursite.com/page-name instead of yoursite.com/001

This increases the overall 'relevancy' of your site, however there is some debate about how effective they are as part of your SEO strategy.

Personally, I use them.

After playing around with blogs and trying to understand permalinks, tags etc i went back to basics internet guru Armand Morin taught me. Simply add a category for every post you make.

if you make a "post" your are creating a narrow stream for google to index, if you create another "page" you are creating a broad stream for google to index.

SEO same principles apply as if your were building any page for ranking

Post to your blog using your keywords. At a minimum, post 2 to 3 times a week. The more frequently you post, the better your chances of being indexed quickly by the search engines. Tip: use keyword research to find good keywords as the main topic of your posts
Include a good Call To Action at the end of each post.

Is it possible to configure permalinks so that it automatically sets it to like:

category\title

in the URL for each post?
