Default PageRank -> Position in Google -> backilnks

I have a question. How much important it is to have high PR in order to be ranked high in Google?

I have many competitors in my nieche that are higher than me and have low PR. My website has PR 2 and I am on the second page of Google. Guy on the first page on #1 has PR1 and on second position there is guy with PR0.

So what is the most important for rankings? Baclinks? They both have more backlinks than me - but still their page has lower PR. I thought that the higher number of links the higher our PR is.

I am confused now on what counts when it comes to high ranking.

It's not very important. It's one of the factors, but there are over 200 factors.

One of my old sites (I sold it earlier in the year) used to rank within the top 3 for a one-word common word with 57,300,000 search results/competitors (it was a site I ran for many years, and became quite popular, hence why it ranked so high for such a competitive keyword)

For some reason, one day Google just removed all of its pagerank. As in, suddenly every page became PR0. It was all unique content, still as popular as ever (2+ million page views per month), but just the PR disappeared.

It didn't, however, affect my position in Google's rankings, nor did it affect its traffic or anything.

Its traffic actually was still growing.

Obviously if there are two websites which are 100% exact, but one has PR3 and one has PR4 then the PR4 one will rank higher. But the chances of that is quite low

So yeah - I would say, from my own experience, that PR definitely isn't a major factor in the SERPs.

It's a factor, yes. Hence having a PR will help a bit. But you cannot ignore the other 200+ factors

Yep, apparently around 200, yes. Of course, on-page SEO and then good backlinks does do a very good job - they are 'main' factors. There must be 175+ 'minor' factors which may change things very slightly.

But yeah, on-page SEO and backlinks is the way to go

Hi disi,

Tristan Summed it up petty well. I will add that Google ranks pages based on relevance. The page that has the highest relevancy score ranks the highest. Learn how to improve your page's relevancy to your targeted keyword and you will rise in rankings.

It is true that backlinks are important, but only in the way they improve your page's relevancy. A single well placed backlink could have more value than thousands of other backlinks, it's not the number of backlinks that is important, it is the total value of your backlinks influence on your relevancy toward your keyword.

From what I know, the number of backlinks matters more than a page rank. I have a PR0 as of now probably because of entertaining some direct advertisers but it certainly did not affect some of my keywords in my niche.

My thoughts exactly. But there are those factors
which are more important than others. It's best to
concentrate on the most important factors and ignore
the rest, especially if you are limited on time, ain't
we all, ?
