Default confused about backlinking/social bookmarking

I'm seeing a lot of posts and comments about how social bookmarking - specifically using a service like Traffic Bug or One Wire - could actually hurt your chance of getting good placement in the SERPs. What's the general consensus on that? I've recently started using One Wire and TB and to be honest, it doesn't seem to have helped a bit in getting a relatively new (5 weeks old) domain any kind of SERP placement ... in fact, compared to domains that I've promoted only with article marketing, it seems to be having a negative effect. I'd really appreciate your input on this.

It's mistaking coincidence with causality.
