Default Are amazon product pages worth trying to beat?

In my continuing keyword research (I know, I know I need to get out there and just do it...humor me), I came upon an amazon product page with a PR of 1 beating out the actual manufacturer of the product with a page having a PR of 7.

Since it is unlikely that I could beat a PR7 page should I even bother to go after Amazon product pages with a PR of 1?

Is amazon just unbeatable?

The keyword phrase is "zune 30gb digital media player".

The PR's can be seen here -> PageRank Search - SEO Tools - Search Engine Optimization, Google Optimization

Anybody?

Not sure what you are asking about "PR."
PR on an amazon product page would be a moot point,
if non existent. PR for amazon.com, well that's another
story. I'd bet for zune products you would need to worry
more about zune's home page than amazon.
Unless you mean PR to be something different than pagerank
by google. I may be wrong, but a url like an amazon product
page would have a nonexistent PR, unless google is now
ranking subdomains and php, asp, url addons.

Keep in mind for individual products you are also competing
with ebay, buy.com, even google products, and the manufacturer
or author. Seems like quite a mountain to climb.

Hi Paul,

If you follow the link I indicated in my OP you will see that the specific Amazon page having to do with the Zune whatever has PR of 1.

The manufacturing page is the third page that shows up and it has a PR of 7.

So my question is does the PR of the Amazon home page leak to the deeper page in amazon and make them real hard to beat as seems to be demonstrated by a PR 7 being beaten by a PR 1 in this case.

I don't want to overanalyze this but I am curious to see if there is any insight to be gained about beating amazon product pages (not the amazon home page) from this thread.

Carlos,

That tool isn't good. The Amazon listing in spot #1 is a PR6 page not a PR1.

Also, you're going to really hurt yourself if you look at PR as some sort of indication of how ranking is done.

In that very query, you have a PR0 and PR1 outranking a PR5.

Hmm...hello again Jason. I have seen a couple of discrepencies in that tool at least between it and the SEO plug-in for Firefox which seems more trustworthy. Then again I don't know which one is more trustworthy based on what but I would think the SEO plug-in in Firefox is more trustworthy given it's greater exposure to SEO professionals.

Is there a free PR determination tool that you would recommend Jason? I cannot run most Windows tools on Linux.

I am only looking at PR as a broad indication of whether the pages that rank for a given phrase are generally beatable or not. In other words a PR 7 page will take a lot more work than a PR 0 page in most instances I think.

I certainly am not going to use it definitively as the final word on which sites to try and beat.

If all else is equal between two keyword phrases I might also use PR as the tie breaker criteria.

The problem with that logic (IMHO) is that if the home page has a PR8, the inner pages will get nice page ranks through pass down and not on their own merit. And I've seen far too many rankings just in the past 2 days that would make no sense from a PR standpoint.

As for a tool, I highly recommend the SEO tool bar for Firefox from tools.seobook.com. It's awesome. With 1 click you get PR, domain age, indexed stuff and more. And you can click on it to see more detail from the sites (like going to yahoo for the links).

I guess I will have to start using Firefox for that again. Firefox is a huge memory hog on my system. It's got memory leaks or something. Always has had that problem. Chomium is much better but it doesn't yet come with any plugins (it's what Google Chrome is based on).

By the way do you count the PR of pages that appear indented in from the parent page? Or do you skip those and just stick to the top level pages in a SERP listing? Just curious.

I look at all my usual analysis data for all listings except indented ones, because I just concern myself with the top listing. Often the 2nd listing is redundant and weak.

Thanks Jason. That little tid bit of insight is valuable to know. Excellent!

Do you take into consideration the shopping pages that show (I see Google put them all together in little groups sometimes where the PR is not certain but where they are all treated as one page by Firefox SEO) up or the local business listings?

Carlos, The answer is: Yes, you can beat an Amazon product page.

It's supposed to be easy if you have a targeted Web site (keyword in domain name for example).

I've done it easily before, and also in at least 2 cases am still trying to do it - so it's not obvious you can always do it.

I get excited when Amazon is #1 because they ARE beatable and it shows competition isn't that tough.

That particular item might be a bit tough to beat them out on since they devote a lot of attention to Zune and marketing it.

They have $millions + to devote to overcoming competition if they desire. Beat them out on something they are concentrating on and they'll just up their budget and manpower to retake the position.

I have researched Amazon closely. They do leave some cracks open but I have seen several times that if they desire a market then they can pretty much take it.

Thanks for that. I actually was aware of that but I have been going crazy trying to keep track of all the Adsense stuff I am learning, my keyword research, making some changes to my web site (which resulted in the broken link), work for my web development clients, work on the Adsense partner deals I have made, work on my rent for web development for rent deal, needing to take care of everyday life things...you name it.

It's all manageable but sometimes little things like a signature link failure take a back seat to things.

I'll fix that...hopefully today. For now I will just take down my signature.

Thanks.
