Best Way To Organize Links

Let's say a person has six sites/blogs: A B C D E F now undoubtedly they will want to do a little SEO by linking A to B and so forth. The most obvious way to link would be to link A to B C D etc and B to A C D etc and so on but is that the most effective way?

Way back in the mist of time I think I read that there was a better way of linking sites, now I'm not to sure what it is - I think, now I only think, it runs something like this

A - B
B - C
C - D

and so on. The idea been that the search engines do not see a whole list of artificial links. But again let me add this is a question about linking to your own sites rather than saying how it should be done. So any advice
