My (first ever) site is third on Yahoo but i've only had one person on my site today

I just thought I'd check some of the search engines to see where my site ranks. It's number three on Yahoo! The problem is, I have only had one visitor today on my site (says Google adsense) and I think that was me!

Could it be that, because I go to my site so often that somehow (although I hardly ever use Yahoo) it has been ranked high ONLY from this computer/IP address?

And are there any free wordpress downloads that allow me to monitor my visitors to see how many I get and what they are doing?

Hi Jell! The fact that you're site isn't receiving many visitors may simply be that it has'nt been crawled (found) by other search engines yet. You may need to get some more links pointing to your website before you start to see much traffic.

Also, if you're ranked number 3 in yahoo (that's usually pretty cool), but if you're ranked for a term that only 1 or 2 people search for each day, then you probably will only get 1 or 2 visitors to your site.

If you need to track who's coming to your site, you could use google analytics. I'm sure there's a wordpress plugin for this too. Search google for something like "google analytics wordpress plugin" - That should do the trick.

The big question is "What keyword are you ranked number three for?" Plenty of keywords get Zero traffic. If your domain name is shimbubzt.com then you'll probably rank Number 1 for the keyword "shimbubzt" in Google and Yahoo as soon as you get indexed. You will also probably get Zero traffic from being ranked #1 for that keyword.

Yes exactly .. you are probaly ranking for a keyword NO ONE is searching for

Use the free Google Keyword Tool to see how many people actually search for the keywords you are concerned about...

I rank well in Yahoo for a lot of poker related terms, which is obviously highly competitive, but to be honest the amount of traffic is tiny compared to Google. I'm probably in a similar position, drifting between 1 and 3 for my main keyword, on both SE's but where Google sends about 100-150 visitors a day, Yahoo maybe sends 5.

Google Analytics is your best bet for tracking your traffic, I think anyway and I've used a lot. Like Jack said, there are various Analytics plugins for WP. This is probably the best...

It probably allows you to block your own visits too, when you're logged in as admin, although I haven't tried that.

I use a little thing called site meter on my blogs. It's free, and will email you to give you regular updates on how many visitors have been coming to your sites and the breakdown of the numbers per day. It will show you what kw was used to find your site, or what site the person came from to find you and which page they click out on. Will also tell you their IP addresses and what system and browser they are using.

I've got the meter showing on my blog as well, and just got some offers of people wanting to buy a site from me - I'm guessing after they saw the traffic I'm getting.

Some people do well with Yahoo and Bing but in my case the traffic is slim compared to what Google has to offer.

I did a quick check on a site of mine that is in a similar situation as yours. For a long time it was ranked #1 for a keyword on yahoo, today it's #3. I don't even know where it's at on google (I'm not working on this project at the moment so it's out of site, out of mind)

A quick look at the stats for that site and from the last 20 hits today, all but 1 were from google or google images, the oddball was from AOL.

I also took a look at the longer term stats from the past few months and the site had 9,000+ google images hits, 7,000+ google hits and 178 from yahoo.

In this case, yahoo isn't doing much for me. The traffic just isn't there like it is on google.

Use a plugin called statpress on your WP blog and you will see which spiders are crawling your site and how often, how many visits your site is getting, what keywords people are typing in to the search engines to get to your site, etc. etc. Google Analytics is cool as well.

As people said, it could be that the keywords you rank for doesn't get searched for often. Or, and I believe this is most likely the case, it is simply that people don't really use yahoo search. Better you try ranking in google.
