Default No Follow Question

I was just checking my backlinks via a backlinks checker tool and was suprised to see that a few sites had a no follow attribute for my link. Some of these are sites that I have exchanged links with and I certainly would not have put a no follow tag in their link -(no idea how to do it!). Why would they do that and should I drop their link?

Another thing that suprised me was that I regularly post on an article site called Article Alley and they have no follow on every single link I have posted in my resource box. What's the point??!

Hi ya,

They did it to stop PR from being passed down to your page.
You have a choice, do the same as what they did (copy what they did if you know what a nofollow is and what it looks like), or remove their link.

to add the nofollow to their link on your site use this code:

Code:
<a href="http://somesite.com/ rel="nofollow">Their Anchor Text</a>
Then point some links to your page to have it re-cached so the changes take effect.

If article alley has the nofollow attribute, then stop using them.

If you traded links, I would contact the other guy and tell him to give you a follow link, as you do for him/her, or you'll delete their link...Or, you can just delete their link, which is what I would probably do.

For Article Alley, if they send you direct traffic then it may be worth it. If not, I wouldn't submit any more articles to them.

i'd be careful though, if their link is getting you good traffic, i'd probably keep it and just add the nofollow attrib to the link they gave.

Well I'll be darned if I can see a thank you button! Perhaps you have to be a long standing member before you can say thanks? But thanks anyway.

Nofollow links still get crawled. And Google is selective in how they filter with Nofollow.

So focus on driving traffics and don't worry about it.

I have either heard or read that Google does not pay much attention to the nofollow tag any more. It was some time ago and I can't remember if it was aa video I saw Matt Cutts do or I read it somewhere. But basically they pretty much ignore it for the most part.

That being said, if you didn't get any nofollow links, then how unnatural would that be? Above all, you want your links to look as natural as possible. So you need to have some nofollow links. That doesn't mean that if you trade links with someone that they should put a nofollow atribute in front of your link and you don't. That is a little one sided in my book. But I wouldn't worry too much about some of your links being nofollow.

If that site is high in PR you should drop your link because it is very helpful to have to the traffic to your website.

If you are using Firefox than add plugins Nodofollow that will tell you which are dofollow and which are Nofollow links before you do posting and also there are some Dofollow site's which are redirect site's so you also have to notice those site's cause those site's don't give you traffic or backlinks.

Yes, Article Alley is a great article directory but the
Nofollow thing makes me stop using them. Same thing
with ArticlesBase. Why should I give you articles,
if you won't give me any link love?!

A nofollow link neither helps nor hurts either party.

If you traded links, then that's exactly what you got.
A trading of links. Nofollow links are valuable in their
own right.

If you stipulated to not nofollow each other, that would
be a different story. Then you could complain.

Too many think that nofollow hurts. It does not hurt.
In fact, it helps get you traffic.

The only reason to ever nofollow links is to avoid spam.
It is for no other purpose. It was designed to keep people
from spamming your high PR site. That's it. It was never designed
as yet another way to manipulate search engines. Perhaps
this morphing has caused google to rethink the whole PR thing.

Don't worry about nofollow links if they are given to you but don't pay or exchange for them. All search engines index nofollow links but Google still doesn't pass Pagerank to your site. Why is getting Pagerank from links important? It is a component(one of many) that contributes to your Google rankings. When all things are relatively equal, the site with lnks from higher Pagerank sites will rank higher than another on Google.
