Default Important Tip For Forum Profile Link Builders

I do a lot of high PR forum profile link building, and I noticed something that could easily trip you up if you're not careful...

Once you set up your signature or About Me links in a forum profile, don't just click on your user name to see what your profile will look like. First, LOG OUT. Then go the forum index page and scroll down to the bottom. Most of them will list a link to their "newest member," which should be you if you check right after making your new account there. Click and see what your profile looks like that way.

See, a search engine spider isn't going to be logged into an account there when it comes crawling. And on some forums, you CANNOT check member profiles unless you're logged into an account there. That will stop a spider in its tracks and you won't get credit for the links you just spent time placing. Checking your own profile while logged in might give a false impression.

Hope that tip helps!

EDIT: I forgot to add this: even on forums where you do not have to be logged in to get to member profiles, what you see at a profile page when logged in can be different than what you see when logged out! Sometimes when you're logged in you WILL see your links, but when logged out they WILL NOT show. Remember: what you see on your profile page when logged out is what the SE spiders will see.

John

John,

I prefer leaving my profiles empty until after I've dropped off of the "newest user(s)" section.

One of the following will take you to your profile in most cases:

"Your Public Profile"
"Your Profile"
"Profile" (sometimes)
Click on your username if it's a link (on some VB boards)
Click on your name in the logged on users list, then the "About Me" tab, then "view 'about me' as others see it" (note: on the VB boards that don't allow signatures, after clicking the above link, replace the "aboutme" in the url to "contactinfo")

ya this is a good tip. I always check forums before I even register to see how a spider would see it!

When I am profile building, I usually use 2 web browser at one time.

I use firefox to create my profiles, and edit the details, and then to check what the profile is gonna look like, I use IE.

The reason I do this is that IE can't read the cookies and session stored by FireFox, so when IE accesses my profile, its viewing it as a user that is not logged in. If I see an error(like a mispelt url or keyword) then I can easily flip back to FireFox (which is still logged in) and make the change..

It sure saves logging in and out of profiles to view results..

Hope this helps

Bruce

Excellent tips by John and Bruce. Thanks for sharing.
It's increasingly becoming obvious that just creating
a profile and loading it with links isn't enough.

Interesting perspectives, but aren't most profiles nofollow?

There are so many forums out there that it's easy to find many with good PR that are dofollow. Just use FireFox and get the NoDoFollow add-on. Then you can tell at a glance.

Great tips John With Angela and Paul's packets I always log out straight after leaving my links for the reason you mention here AND so mods/admins don't see me logged in, look at my profile, label me a spammer and ban my account. I also ping my public(when logged out) profiles, and this seems to have really helped get my links seen quicker

Is there anything you can't Ping??? And does pinging something that is not yours have a different affect, or is it all the same?

I ping my profiles, like I said above and also my actual sites every now and then. I view pinging as something that gives your sites a better chance of being seen by the search engines, and the more you are spidered, the more your ranking will rise if you are doing things right

I suppose anyone doing profile links who does not check that profiles are viewable without being logged in deserves everything they get really?

I echo the point about pinging/bookmarking. If you don't then half your links will never ever be indexed.
