Wordpress (SEO) Questions

Hey guys,

I have (2) quick questions i would like your opinions on if you get a chance.

In wordpress when adding a new post, how many tags should be used?

Is there is certain amount that most people use? I have heard some people say to only use 2 or 3 and then on the other hand some people say it doesn't really matter.

And my second question is about (excerpts)!

Should i be using this feature everytime i add a post?

I dont believe in going overboard with tags. Some sites i dont use them at all. If I do use them its 3 or 4 max.

As for excerpts - do you mean the Read More feature?
I use the Evermore plugin which autmatically inserts this after a set amount of characters.
It prevents your home page from republishing your entire articles as happens by default.

It does not really matter on how many tags you are using, as long as the tags really describe what your blog post is all about.

I have read in the past somewhere that around five tags is a good number, a number that search engines like. I don't recall where I read it but that has always stuck in my mind. I also recall reading that it isn't a huge factor to be too concerned about.

I don't know about excerpts...

Yeah I usually go form anything from 1 to 5 tags. Depending on how many keywords I want the page to be targeting towards.

I normally add just 1 or 2 initially and then watch my traffic. If I get traffic from unsuspecting KWs I usually add these in to increase the rankings.

Using excerpts is up to you, it all depends on how your website is set up and what your structural plans are.

One question from my side if Cpotts28 does not feel bad

Do we have to write our keywords (targeted one) in the tags ? Or just we have to write those words that describe our article?

I usually put 3 to 6 tags at most. You don't want to seem spammy to the engines.

I think it doesn't really matter. As long as you add in some relevant tags, the number doesn't matter. For SEO purpose, tags doesn't matter much, maybe 0.5% -1% at most?

First, we should, probably, understand why and how to use tags for our "folksonomy". The number of tags is irrelevant if we have no idea what they are and how to use them.

Excerpts are either there defined by the template or are not there.
Any template can use one of the two template tags:
the_content and/or the_excerpt

You are probably referring (with the wrong name) to the "more" link, which should be manually inserted where the blogger wants to break the text and to insert a "read more..." link.
FYI: Excerpts do not have the read more link.
