Default either no.1 for one keyword or no.5 for 5 keywords

I was wondering which is better.

I have identified my main key word I want to target. But I also have 5 equally good keywords.

Looking at the competion the top 5 slot for all the keywords with work should be obtainable. Each keywords gets abour 110000 hits per month.

I also see that i have some stiff competition at the no.1 spots for all the keywords.

MY content is signifcantly different to anything else in the top 5 sites.

My strategy was going to be.

Target top 5 in my main keyword, then target top 5 in my other keywords, then comeback to target no.1 spots.

is this a good strategy?

Hopefully your keyword research is on point. If it is, I'd say that you'll get some heavy traffic to your site if you're ranking at #5 for five terms that get that many searches...so yes.

thanks dandee.

is it also worth me targetting keywords with lower search numbers i.e. 20000 per month?

as i believe i could quickly hit no.1 for those.

The number one spot will pull more click throughs.

It doesn't matter though because if you believe you can actually rank #1 or #5 for all your other keywords is hypothetical.

AOL has done and reported on position click throughs and #5 gets 8.5x less click throughs. Click Rate for Top 10 Search Results - Jim Boykin’s SEO Blog

I just searched this but read the actual report when it came out.

And #1 for you when you search may not be the same result returned for someone searching in another area. Google is targeting IP's and Cookies. So you may think you are #1 but are not.

SEO takes time. Just keep building backlinks for all of the keywords. Your strategy isn't going to matter because you are not going to see jumps like that. Google takes months to value the backlinks. Most of the time you'll end up being ranked on the 3rd or 4th page, and then you'll hit #1 out of nowhere one day.

#5 for five keywords

I would rather be on the first page for 5 keywords then put all my effort into a single keyword.

Synthesize me, And reboot, I need to start again, I need to make it different

i only depend on your keyword ..how much a single keyword has SE volume ? 1st rank for a good keyword can give you much more traffic then 5th rank for 5 low traffic keyword ...and don't forget that 1st position means that you are getting around 60 % of traffic of total searches ..

When you say your content is significantly different to anything else in the top 5 what exactly do you mean?

The thing is, there are certain keywords that Google believe are 100% relevant to ecommerce type sites, other keywords which Google believe 100% relevant to an info type site and then others which are a mixture of everything.

The point is are your pages relevant in Google's eyes for the keywords in question?

I would rather rank #5 for five quality keywords then rank #1 for one quality keywords.

Would you rather rank #1 for 'home sales'?

or

#5 for 'home sales', 'home loans', 'mortgages', 'foreclosures' and 'home financing' ?

I would rather cast a wide net then try to catch all of my fish with a spear.
