Tim, it's a massive question and not one that can be answered in a forum thread easily. Whole $1000 courses have been sold to teach this stuff. However, in short if your minisite is to be geared up to pre-sell your product then you need to determine whether the keywords you chose would be keywords used by people actively looking to buy your product.

The keywords you determine to be "buyer" keywords or should I say, more likely to be buyer keywords should be the ones you concentrate on, the rest should be filler for content.

You then need to set your site out as a heirachy with your main keyword the focus of the home page and then link down to some secondary keywords which could be categories. In each case try optimising each page for a keyword.

At this point you need to get yourself a good book on SEO both on page and off page. Also search here at warrior as there is a ton of advice on good SEO practices.

All I can say is by what I've done. I've focus on long-tail KWs and concentrate on two niches. Once I move within the top five, then move on to other keywords.

Its true that these sort of questions cannot discussed in a thread. It won't be followable.
There are two possible answers, both are arguable.

I would suggest you to Optimize for 10-14 uncompetitive keywords. It will take lot of work for sure but the work as a whole is about equal to that of work required for optimization for 2 big keywords. When you are ruling 10-14 keywords, you can afford to lose rankings for one or two keywords. When you are optimizing for 2 keywords, that is unaffordable. There are strange things happening with the rankings, with 10+ keywords, those things won't matter that much to you.
So,"Better I Rule 100 keywords than I rule one"

Start optimizing for uncompetitive ones and as you go about the work, you are on track to optimize for the main keywords as well because they are likely to be relevant and your SEO efforts to rank for 10 keywords will help you when you try to rank for the main ones..
In the next month, you can start optimizing for your premium keywords.Initially,go with the less competitive ones.

SEO starts with Onsite phase and then move towards offsite phases. That is how it works and i work similarly too.If you are writing articles prepare 10-20 different Authors Bio Box and use all your diverse keywords as anchor texts. You can also broaden the phrase to insert two keywords in one anchor.
The techniques are more or less similar.

BTW,Good Luck for your campaign.
