Default #1 on Google but Wrong Keyword Phrase

Okay I'm new to learning to SEO but I know it's important and being #1 but for a phrase that no one is looking for is a huge lesson. I got so excited about my website and excited about this process I forgot the real keyword phrase I was trying to target. So I re worked the page still have that keyword phrase and a new one in my page, tags etc. Now to work on that and get that phrase ranked. Competition is steeper but I think I can I think I can!

So my question is, anyone else every optimize for the wrong word or phrase and had to change it? Does that disturb Google when you are a new site trying to make it?

It's better to do it while it is new IMHO.
This way it doesn't slow down your movement in the SERPs.

I do have some sites that I use just for testing such things and I never had any of them banned or even penalized as far as I know.

Solution:

1. Change the content on the page around the good keyword phrase
2. Build new backlinks with the right anchor text

After you've changed the content do this first.

Do a bookmark of your site at Digg.com using your right keyword phrase as your anchor text. Make the story longer than usually, more like an article and have your keywords in there a few times. This will give search engines the "food" they need. That in conjunction with Digg's high PR can land you on the first page of Google if there's not much competion.

Do th esame thing with these other sites: slideshare.com, ***********************, docstoc.com, scribd.com

Have a great day !
