Title says it all - I'll be adding a few words (not subtracting) in the title tag - will this hurt my rankings?

No it will make no difference. Google ads more weight to the content on your page than the title tags. I accidently left an incorrect title tag in a web page that was completely unrelated to the content and didn't notice for a year, but the visitors coming through were also associated with my page content, which is all that matters. Title tags should be thought of as a sign post, not a definitive explanation of your content

My experience is that the title tag is the single most important element of on-page optimisation, but this is fairly easily out-done with links/anchor text to the specific page. What I mean is, that if you have some links to your page/site already and change the title tag to different keywords, it is likely to affect your position for those keywords (positive for the new ones, negative for the old ones). Even without keywords in the title tag, building links to that page with the keywords in the anchor text will usually get you ranked for those phrases. Of course, it's better if you have both and the results are entirely dependent on how much competition you have for the keywords! |
