Default 301 Redirect Question

I recently changed a couple of my sites from html to Wordpress so I set up 301 redirects from the old pages to the new ones.

It's been probably a month since I did this and I've found that the old html pages are still ranking in similar positions in the search engines despite the 301 redirect. In one case for a weak keyword both the html page and the new page are both ranking on the first page.

From what I can tell, none of the backlink juice that the old pages have has been transfered to the new pages so I was wondering;

Is there a general time frame for backlink juice/page rank to pass from an old page to the new page when doing a 301 redirect or is it just very random?

The "backlink juice" will not automatically pass to the new domain simply because you have the 301 redirects in place; you have to get all the backlinks to the old page transferred to the new page. Having tried to do this for a site recently it seems harder to get some links changed than it was to get them originally. Keep promoting the new pages and keep the redirects in place, probably for ever.

When planning future sites, read Hypertext Style: Cool URIs don't change. first.

Hang on, are you sure?

I'm pretty sure I've read that the backlinks will be passed to where the 301 redirect goes.

If that wasn't the case, that any big site that decided to change their website would have to start from scratch.
