Is this question real? Yahoo and google are not on the web by magic.
They pay millions.

Yahoo and Google don't pay hosting fees because they are hosting
their own sites, I am 99.99999% sure. With sites that big you must
do some in-house hosting, monitoring, back up, etc. Perhaps yahoo
is sourced out, but google probably runs their own show 100%

You can host your own site too and no hosting fees. But it is
not for the faint of heart. Nor is it needed.

Yahoo and google were created by computer geeks (I use
that term with affection), put up on the web, kicked some butt
because they worked hard, got millions of dollars in backing,
and the rest is history. Google now has billions. And a $500
a share stock price.

I am not even sure what this question really is about.

Are you talking about free websites that yahoo or google might
offer? If they do, these sites are paid for by having their ads
put on your sites. Most all free places to have sites insist on
putting ads on your sites. If you don't want the ads, then you
pay a fee.

I don't think many people are even doing much with stuff like
geocities (gosh that is so 1999). Myspace, facebook, twitter,
squidoo, have replaced those relics. They are free, but they
all have ads. Well, twitter does not. Yet. They make money via
3rd parties.
