Google Third Party Ads?

Since Google has introduced third party ads in their content network, does this change affect Adsense earnings? I have heard a few people mention that their Adsense earnings have dropped since this change. How is this? Do we not still get paid for those third party ads if they are displayed on our sites? Or perhaps I guess they have a lower cost per click? Please explain because I have done some research on this, but keep seeing more questions than answers.
