Default to hyphen or not to hyphen?

After reading Xfactors and other members threads on niche adsense sites. I have found a consumer product that has no competition. It has two words in it. The .com has been regged. Should I use the .net or .org or use the .com with a hyphen in it?

I've tried hyphenated keyword URL's and they didn't rank well.

Come on people, urls don't get ranked. Websites
get ranked. Hyphen or not, it does not matter.
You can put as many or as few hyphens as you want.
If you don't SEO the RIGHT way, nothing else matters.
Google could give a rip what your domain is.

I always try and come up with new examples on this topic:

Would anyone care to guess as to what
peacefulvalleycreation.com ranks high for?
It aint peaceful and it aint a valley. And creation? Hardly.

Do a search for military tributes. On the first
page is the hyphenated, military-tributes.com

Seriously, you can take xyz-xyz.com and get top ranked for
any keyword you wish! Hyphens and all!

Choose the coolest sounding domain, and run with it.

Paul

Anyone who tells you that is full of nonsense.
Warriorforum.com Where's the keyword they rank for?
They are not a warrior forum. They are an internet marketing forum.
Where is internet and/or marketing in the domain?

wikipedia? Amazon? even the ridiculous google, yahoo, and bing.
Not to mention twitter...

peacefulvalleycreation.com top site for online blackjack.
I guess they did not get the memo.

Two top ranked real estate sites: zillow.com and trulia.com
Where's the keyword?

Interesting about zillow. Let's take it as a case study, if you
will. Who told them they can rank high for real estate with a
nonsense domain like zillow.com? What is a zillow? A made up
word even!!!!

If that's not proof enough, I could give you many more.

Anyone who tells you that you MUST put a keyword in the
domain is nuts. Websites get ranked. Not domains.

Here's another one: Do you know what powells.com ranks
high for? You would never guess! (hint: used books)

No matter what you choose as a domain, if you SEO the RIGHT
way, you will get ranked. Many of the top domains are just
nonsense words.

Think about wordpress.com. Where's the keyword blog?

How about flickr? Not even a word. Where's photo? Image?

livejasmin.com You would NEVER guess what that ranks for!!!!!

These are only a few examples of websites that use nonsense words
and blow everyone out of the water. Don't concentrate on domain.
It does not matter. If someone can take zillow and kick butt, so can
you. I'll bet they get a ton of emails from so-called experts asking
them for advice on getting a site ranked, cuz the keyword thing must
be driving them nuts.

I understand what your saying and you are right in some cases, but don't they have a huge number of backlinks? I'm not trying to brand a site im trying to get a micro niche adsense site to number 1 spot with the least time as possible. I know the search term "click here" has adobe in the #1 spot but adobe has millions of backlinks.

paulgl is absolutely right.there is never to show that having a keyword in your URL will improve your rankings.Amazon and the likes are good examples

What you need is good quality links pointing to your site to improve rankings. There are many other factors to help boost your site and backlinks are one of the most important.
