An example is I use arcade games that people can put on their website/myspace/blog/ for free that brings me in some backlinks of this type.

If you are selling a product starting an affiliate program will also get you some decent backlinks.

Did you try it and had much success? I think only authority blog with good content will attract enough bookmarks.

I Forgot always keep your "hunt" for links in what honest reliable webmasters/SEO called "white neck" or "white collar" link exchange practices. The reason you have time and effort in your project and you do not want the search engines to "veto" your website.

How about this?

Go to the websites in position #1-#5 for the keyword you want to rank for. Then put them all into a free backlink checker tool like Backlinkwatch, Yahoo site explorer, or Check-Backlink. And then figure out how they got their links and get them all yourself.

Then, find sites that other SEOers are backlinking, and get their links. Figure out how they got them, where they might have found them, and find your own. All the people who sell backlink packets are a good start...

You can do digg and reddit and other social bookmarks. If they are dofollow they are even better. You can check mine out below : ) its just the beginning but a link is a link and worth it.

A new strategy is to join high PR forums and such and make that smiley face into a backlink.

If you are a member of lots of forums this is a no brainer; however if they allow keywords in your signature then I would do that over the smiley. Just do the smiley when forums don't allow keywords.

I used to leave comment in dofollow blog, that's the most simplest way to get one-way quality backlinks. Forum posting is another great method too.

You have gotten very good advice already. But i will like to add "online classified". There are lots of free classifieds ads online, simply submit a free classified ads and include your URL.

Thanks for all the great advice, is it best to submit to a few really high profile sites, or to spam hundrds of lesser sites?

I've heard too many sites can actually have a negative influence on my site, but I'm not sure what the rules of that are.

I've got a fair few backlinks already, but was wondering whether I should be very careful about which sites I link to.
