social media profiles & backlinking question

Do you create multiple profiles at the various bookmarking/social media sites (like Mixx, DailyMotion, epinions, etc.)? Do the profiles themselves have any backlinking benefit, or is it the bookmarking you can do through each of the profiles that's the backlinking benefit?

I create multiple profiles just to avoid self-promotion guideline on those sites, I don't think linking from the same site multiple times is any way near using different sites!
