Hi all, Does anyone have any stats on 1st page success in organic searches? I am familiar with Adwords but I would like to know if only the 1st position in organic results will get clickthrough? What if you are in 5th position or on the 2nd page? Can you expect any clickthroughs? Any input much appreciated! |

There are many tests regarding this. The results are based on the eye movement of people looking at pages. The first 3 organic results are clicked most! The top Adwords ads are also clicked, but not as much as the organic results. After the first 3 organic results it goes down fast and on the second page you won't get many clicks. Sorry, but all I can say is....you have to be in the top 3! Regards, Mike |

Whoa. Only the top 3. I normally scan the whole first page and rarely go to the second. I found in adwords that being in first position rarely helped me. 4-7 seemed better. Could this not be said of Organic search as well?

They've done studies, and yes the top 3 get the most clicks. That shouldn't be your sticking pint though. I have a site ranked 4-6 that gets 50-100 visits a day. Just depends on what keywords you go after. |

A lot also has to do with the quality of the top sites. If they are garbage then you have a greater chance of people working their way down the list. I wouldn't worry too much about wikipedia or youtube. They are speed bumps but not really what most people are looking for. You essentially want to be above the fold.. the part of the screen that is seen without having to scroll. On my monitor, if there are no google ads it's the top 6 listed sites. The bottom half of the page seems to be where the traffic drops and the top of page 2 I feel is better then being at the bottom of page 1. Past page two I haven't seem much difference in traffic between #25 and #250... it's all long-tail at that point. Your title and description also play a large part when attempting to catch attention... it's your sales pitch and your chance to say 'pick me pick me' Topic or niche also play a large part as well. Certain topics or niches are more notorious for extreme browsing and not buying (porn) |
