Is the following metatag appropriate for a site that sells books? <meta name="Keywords" content="books, publish, reading, author, genres, cover ,novel" />

There is no easy way to say this... let's get started:

If you website is selling e-books, I think it is better to select a niche, and build your bookstore around that topic, the conversion would be higher.

Unless you already have tons of money to spend, don't build general bookstore.

Try to research your market a bit, see who is your targeted customer and how you are going to tap into this crowd... If you are new in IM, try to learn BUM marketing first, leave the website thing alone...

Absolutely! Go niche all the way. The internet is a huge place. I have one student bringing in 5k a month now in a niche I had never heard of before I met him.

First of all you should have a single space after each comma. Those keywords are very huge broad keywords, which is fine, but i would also include a few more specific longtail keywords phrase that you want to target on your home page such as "buy books online" or whatever your keyword may be.

I agree that those are some rather broad terms.
Most any of those words could be used in a multitude of ways.
Some sort of niche would be best.

I found that for an e-commerce store using the word "buy" in the phrases helped narrow down the field some and reduces your bounce rate.
