How To Get Massive Traffic Thru Wikipedia!!

Hey guys,

I want to share a traffic source I stumbled upon entirely by accident.

I started a blog not too long ago, but never really posted much of anything on it until this past Monday.

Basically, starting Monday, I looked at Google Trends to see what the Hot Topics were for the day.

Next, I chose a topic and wrote a blog about it.

After the blog was written, I bookmarked the link, pinged it, yada, yada, yada... Then, I looked on Wikipedia to see if there was any info on it yet. Well, there wasn't anything there yet.

So, I kindly posted some info about the news and provided a link to my site as the Source. Done.

Later, I checked my Google Analytics and I was receiving HUNDREDS of visitors on a new blog that wasn't even indexed by Google yet.

When I checked the traffic sources, over 95% of the traffic came from Wikipedia. Wow!

So, I simply Rinsed and Repeated, but this time I wrote on multiple Hot Trends and verified that Wikipedia showed up on the first page of searches for the Trend search terms.

The traffic increased daily and we had close to 1000 page views from almost 800 visitors on yesterday alone.

This was with only about 5 days online and NO pages Indexed by Google.

I tried to insert the photos here, but couldn't figure it out, so I did a blog post and attached the snapshots.

There is nothing to buy here. Just wanted to share something I came upon since this forum has taught me a lot.

NOTE: You have to be sure that you are adding good content to Wikipedia though. Don't just spam them. Be creative.

Yeah be careful with this. The mods get pretty anoyed if you keep putting removed links back and can take measures to ban you (so I believe).

Oh, and external wikipedia links are nofollow so won't give you any search engine advantage. But still, awesome traffic

Yes the Mods can be pretty nasty at times.

I found the best way to make your posts stick is to stay under the radar a bit. Some mods just seem to dislike anything that isn't a big name news site as a source. This is really wrong though since a lot of great news is discovered in blogs before news sites catch wind.

Anyway, my tip is to ALWAYS edit anonymously.

For some reason, all the edits that I made anonymously that linked to the blog were untouched. Later, I logged in and made edits and just hours later, a User had changed my links to his by searching under my User name.

I reverted them back and before you know it, the Mods were all over it and took my links out again. Unfairly, they wanted to keep my content and even a new article that I created, but removed the blog as the source.

Later, I went back in anonymous and made new edits on new trends and they went untouched.

It's a weird system that they have going. So, you have to kinda play the game anyway that you can.

This is mainly a great traffic builder for new sites that have not been indexed yet. You get instant traffic. But, as for me, once my site is indexed and getting Search Engine traffic, I won't use this Wiki strategy as much. It's just a neat traffic stimulator for starters.

So true Easy Cash - I've played around with a similar tactic never tried the hot trends idea which is really nifty ....I don't really know exactly how the Wikipedia system works but I do know that they monitor your IP address and probably if an IP visits the page too often then there maybe some sort of alert.

So a good idea would be to post the page add the link and not visit it too often if ever again.

I would post a lot on one topic.

My topic posting is unpredictable so they could never guess where else I might post. The reason it is unpredictable is because Google Trends is unpredictable.

One day I got traffic from Katt Williams being arrested, the next day, Eva Mendes Wardrobe malfunction, then the biggest one, Charla Nash on Oprah revealing her face after the chimpanzee attack.

Also, it is good to use an anonymous proxy. I haven't had to since I have about 4 comupters at home and one at my day job.

I plan to use the anonymous proxy too, just to switch things up.

Remember, we are not trying to spam them, but we are trying to get around the unfair bias of many of the Mods. Blog news is good news too.

Anyway, I haven't done any posts this weekend, so traffic has slumped a little. However, I am starting to see a little traffic from other sources such as Social BookMark sites, etc. Only a few search engine hits, but they're coming.

And you would monetize with Adsense or some CPA offers? If you're following hot topics doesn't that mean it will be mostly news/entertainment stuff and so very hard to monetize?

I was just using Adsense. Not a great Clickthru rate but I had that blog as a test blog.

It would be better to do Hot Topics that are product-based. For instance, Zhu Zhu Pets was hot the other day. Another blogger I follow used this a while back when Zhu Zhu pets were on the hot list and used Amazon Associates links to Monetize and did well.

This brings up another VERY important point.

After further research, it appears that the Wiki Mods are EXTRA sensitive on articles/biographies of living people.

Once they caught wind of me posting on these types of articles, they went on a mission and axed a few that appeared under that User name.

SO....

I'd stay away from Hot Topics that are about a specifc person. Search for hot topics with products or general subjects (like Black Friday or Zhu Zhu Pets). These seem to raise less attention and may be easier to monetize.

There are over 3 Million Articles on Wikipedia. They can't all be monitored tightly. And I read a report that about 97% of the articles on Wiki show up in the 1st page results in Google for their topic. This is an easy way to ride their coattails until you build up your own website rankings.

Well, like I said, I learned SOOO much from this forum that I truly wanted to give back when I found something unique that worked. This really does work well. I was shocked at the traffic. Truly, we were not expecting it at all.

We were just linking to Wikipedia because they had a good PR. Never thought traffic would flow in like it did.

I don't plan to keep up the blog though. It was an experiment. I may relaunch it later when I can outsource the blogging.

I don't plan on doing the work. Looking for a more passive income.

Will be using the similar Wiki strategy for product based sites. Funniest thing happened, I saw a XFactor-type Adsense site using the Wiki strategy. Looks like they found it long before me according to the Edit history on the article.

That brings up a good point.

Check for the frequency of updates on the History tab at the top. Look for pages with a decent amount of traffic and few edits, like maybe every few days or even weeks preferably.

Ah, I thought you'd never ask.

This site gives free stats. You type in the page name and it pulls up the traffic for the month you choose in a bar graph that also separates the traffic by day.

It is truly awesome and free.

That's a great way to drive huge traffic to your site. But do you need to write an article and include your link and submit to Wikipedia? No approval needed by Wikipedia team?

Is it possible to find a relevant post in our blog, and add the link to the relevant article in Wikipedia?

You could do both, but normally, you won't need to write a whole new Wikipedia article.

Most of the time, we did the latter. Just posted a link in Wikipedia on an existiing article to a blog that we had created. You normally want to add a little bit to the Wiki article though if possible, otherwise you're just link spamming and can be a target for the Mods.

Use with caution..some Mods on Wiki are just plain nasty for no reason.

You're absolutely correct. That's the nature of competition though.

Once again, this is not a proposed way to get traffic forever. This is only suggested until you have had time to get your site indexed well and start getting traffic from SERPs, etc.

You should definitely continue all your other marketing efforts, but I found that other marketing strategies work after a few weeks just due to the time it takes to get indexed.

Everything in this life could be considered temporary. How we market today is not how we marketed just 3 years ago and will probably change a multitude of times within in the next few years.

Take advantage while it is available and when it does change....Adapt!

Well there is always Clickbank, CPA, etc..

Personally, I am working on buidling a business but some could do ok with this. In the end, spamming is not the way to go. The down side is that overly aggressive mods can take away a legit link which is valuable and relevant.

It would definitely continue working. It is just better to find a more solid topic rather than "trendy" topics if you are looking for a set it and forget it type of solution.

I've stopped my trend posting, but will be using this to promote my Amazonian Deals site once I start putting product reviews on it.

Also, you don't have to worry much about your link being removed IF your info is solid and new AND if your site looks "good". They kind of frown upon Blogs as sources sometimes, but not always.

If you link them to your regular site as a source, you shouldn't have many problems with the Mods.

Good points WareTime,

However, it is important NOT to spam them with links and no relevant info on the topic.

I've have some links removed and some remained and from speaking to the Mods, they do not seem to have a problem with linking to a site if it has good relevant content. Wikipedia is FULL of links to sites and encourage citing resources for any new info added to an article.

They are NOT particularly fond of links to blogs, but especially so on articles about living persons.

If you can provide good, new info on an existing article in your niche, it could not (or should not) be seen as spam to show your site as a resource. Of course, there will be some Mods that are jerks and will remove just about anything, but there are over 3 million articles.

Also, you can always debate with any mod that removes a link to find out why. There stance is to always look at the author as though he/she acted in good faith. It's actually in their bylaws or something.

Don't post 15 links all over the place for no reason. That WILL likely get you blocked.

But my blog is getting more and more Google indexing and I am not considered a link spammer even though some Mods didn't agree with some of my Blog resource links.

Do it the right way and you will get tons of extra traffic.

So even if your site doesn't directly rank on a keyword, you can still "rank" by being on the page with Wikipedia.

its not enough to just 'be informative'

you have to be an authority to last in wikipedia. the mods eventually remove you.

i used to make a few bucks a day doing this.

There are a couple other wikipedia tricks that allow you to stay on the page longer - and not get the mods attention.

what most people do is post their links in EXTERNAL LINKS. the mods watch this area closely.

3 tips that may help you avoid the mods.

• Post in the BODY of the articles.
• Post in the REFERENCES portion of the articles
• Create a NEW esoteric concept (I created a new word. It lasted on Wikipedia for 3 years - lol) It's still all over the internet, though they took it down a few months ago.

For the life of me I cannot find the "Edit" button on the wiki page. I have spent 1 hour looking around and feel like an idiot as I am obviously overlooking something. Is the edit button on the top of the actual page on an inner page?

Never mind, I realized that a bunch of these wikis are "semi protected" and as a result there is no "Edit" function that shows up at the top.

Right, as mentioned previously, this is not a permanent thing. It is a definite traffic booster. We even have proof from someone who tried it and commented above.

Also, although it may not be permanent. If you follow my warnings above, you could last a long time.

As you mention, I never post under the External Links section. I provide some new info and then add a site as a reference. I started back doing this again last night and INSTANT traffic.

Who knows how long it will last, but who cares. With over 3 Million articles out there, how many could you use to drive a little extra traffic here and there until you get your SERP traffic going.

This shouldn't be your only traffic source, just a Booster of sorts.

Glad you were able to use a similar strategy too.

Yeh, some of the pages are "semi-protected", but not a majority. To edit those pages, you have to be logged in and then have at least 10 Edits under your log in.

It is NOT a good idea to do that though. The only time I brought attention to myself was when I went to edit a "semi-protected" page on Lady Gaga.

Once the Mods that "patrol" (yes, they actually call it that) that page saw my change, they searched my username for ALL of my Edits and when on a mission to change them. That was when I went back underground. They had no real reason, except that they "dont usually use blogs as references".

So, lay low. There are plenty of regular pages that can be edited and can bring decent traffic.

It never hurts to try. Even if it gets removed "some day", that day may be months or even years from now.

Go for it. It works.

I did post some external links on Wikipedia a few weeks ago, but needless to say they were quickly removed- but writing a new article could be a different story.

I wonder if there are any other worthwhile wiki sites that although they obviously don't have the reach of wikipedia might not be as strict.

As was previously posted, Wiki removes your links VERY fast.

You really need to add new info and post links in reference section.

Post good content and use the reference section. It is critical. You can still be removed, but that's just how the game goes.
