I never thought about this before - but I have a client's landing page that has listed in the SERPs as: abc dot com - however, I backlink to his landing page as www dot abc dot com. Should I backlink to his site the way it is listed in the SERPs (in other words - drop the www) or does it really matter? |

I think its important to tell Google the preferred url (with or without www). You could use a 301 redirect for the domain without the www. Does your client or you have a lot of backlinks where the domain is without the www?

I would use a redirect and be consistent about how you list the site. Pick one and go with it.

To make sure you get the “link juice” from any non-www links and avoid any duplicate content issue (the search engines may actually view the non-www and www as duplicate pages) you can use a 301 redirect. Matt Cutts has put out a lot information on the URL Canonicalization and the duplicate content issue.
