Default DOT org versus DOT info - Interesting Google Results

I recently registered 1 .org and 6 .info domains based on the same broad keyword.

I put a WP blog (no posts) on each of the .info's 3 days after registration, and 4 of them are still waiting for Google to come calling.

One of the others got a visit the day after the blog installation and the last one a day later.

The interesting thing is the .org domain.

Except for the TLD extension it was the same name as the .info that got a Google bot visit after 4 days.

Guess when Google visited? Only two days after registration and BEFORE I installed a blog.

Need to check this out more.

I've experienced that before as well in regards to indexing.

Also .orgs outrank .infos sthat they rank higher dispite the fact that everyone claims that extentions are treated equally.

IMO just about anything will out rank those
$1 .info names. Better used for other things...

.com, .net, and .org is the best way to go
when trying to rank in SE's.

Yes, I use .com, .net, or .org for SEO. I use .info only if I am just redirecting to
a clickbank product.

Craig,

I don't know so much about what happens further down the line and this was a limited example.

What I found surprising was that Google came to the .org when it had no content while the .info's had a Wordpress blog and took longer to index.

I've posted on a Wordpress blog and had Google index it in under 5 minutes. I'll check with the .info's to see if this is the case too once they are indexed.

Extensions are definitely not treated identically with Google.

For one thing, the total length of the URL is an important factor with Google. Adding the extra letter for the .info hurts the URL length.

They have also favored .edu and .org domains ever since they introduced Adwords. It seems they want information resources higher in the regular listings so the regular listings don't compete with their paid ads.

When I can't find .com domain name I always try to go with .org. I never saw any difference in ranking or indexing my websites when I used .org instead of .com.

I've had good results with .info domains. I register lots of .info domains every year and they manage to rank. Only thing is that .com ranks faster, just a bit faster. .info domains still are really good for those on a shoe string budget.

I've seen the effect you're describing, quick visits from Googlebot to a new domain, take place with all types of domains, .infos included. Some get the hosting account default pages indexed very quickly while others don't. Other new domains, .com/.net/.org/.info, Googlebot ignored.

I suspect that Google has a 'bot that visits selected newly registered domains looking for common spamdexing scripts like YACG in order to flag them quickly for a cursory manual quality review if the script footprints are found.

I agree. I've recently purchased some .info domains and they are ranking fine. It does take about one extra day to get indexed.

Ditto on the .info. Takes a day or so longer, but in the end they rank just as well as any other.

That extra day seems to freak a lot of people out though... lol

If that was true your average WP blog would be screwed.

I know it. If your a news site, super fast indexing matters. If your tossing another article on your mesothelioma site, who cares if it takes a minute, an hour or a week?
