Default First page on Google, no traffic...any suggestions?

Hi everybody,

I'm new at internet marketing and I've started only about a month ago, time in which I managed to put up 3 sites. The first two are nowhere to be found in google, but that's the learning curve I suppose

With the 3rd one I managed to rank on the first page in google from a total number of about 68k other sites. But even though I'm the 4th on phrase search and 6th on broad search I have almost no traffic coming my way. Google keywords tool says that the keyword that I"m ranked for gets about 27.000 phrase searches per month, that almost 1000 a day. For more than a week since I'm on the first page I just got about 10 visits, that's like 1 visitor a day

Can anybody tell me why is this happening?

Where are the 1k dudes going everyday?

Can it be that google keywords tool is not giving me the correct info about monthly searches and in fact nobody is searching my keyword?

Right now I'm working on linkbuilding to try and reach the no1 slot. but I'm losing motivation everyday...should I dorp it and invest my time in something new?

If your traffic is targeted and you're ranking high in Google then something might be wrong with whatever it is you're offering.

Traffic and ranking is only one part of the puzzle.

Without knowing how you've set up the other pieces, it's tough to say what could be going wrong.

There could be a few things at work here.

Have you stopped to consider that the answer to your keyword question is answered in the first two results of search?

If you are competing against an authority site, your "traffic" might only need a quick answer and listing #1 and #2 might cover all the bases for the searcher.

Or

Google might be throwing you a curve ball...

Cross reference all keyword research with other tools, and also with your own brain.

Test it yourself by aiming for that #1 spot.

Be aware that you might take a long time to get that #1 spot only to find it is completely worthless, so you need to use your marketing brain to assess if it is worth your time.

Peace

Jay

Could be your title. Just cause google likes it doesn't make it click-able to a human.

Being # 6 is not so hot for 1000 daily searches. Search for a google heatmap to see why.

UPDATE

I finally reached the #1 spot on page one.....and the average number of visitors per day is....drum rolls.....10

Well, it looks to me like I did a noob mistake. When searching for a good keyword with google's free tool, I only looked at the broad and phrase search volumes, which were both 27.000 searches/month.

I did not bother to see that the exact search volume is of about 390 searches/month, which would explain the overwhelming number of 10 visitors/day.

So the lesson to be learned here is that when looking for potential keyword traffic with google's keyword tool, set the filter on EXACT searches.

For any beginner to be placed on the first page itself, I consider as an achievement since its among 68k sites!. Congrats first. Very little traffic ?!. Its a puzzle !. You may find valuable answer to your question through web central forum where people talk about their traffic etc.,Good luck in future!

Hey....

It may have been a mistake, but great job on getting the number one spot!

Most marketers will never get anything to that sweet place. So pat yourself on the back. You deserve it.

So you shouldn't be discouraged at all. You are FAR AHEAD of the average IMer. Build on your success (and trust me, it's much more of a success than a failure).

That happen to me also. I tried so hard to rank for page 1 and when I reach there, there is no traffic.

I have learn from some seo experts that we need to check the difference between the number of broad match and exact match. If the gap is huge, then that keyword is probably not what the users are searching for. If it is narrow, then there is a very high chance that the number you see from the google tool is accurate.

To play safe, cross check with other keyword tools. Double check to make sure the keywords does have good amount of searches.

By the way, also take note that the numbers reported by google tool include their partner network and other places. It is not the number of searches done in google only.

Looks like you do not have a ranking problem.
On the contrary you have ranked high with a high demand search phrase.

So the challenge is, that the persuasion powers of your site title
and the description are not good.

You could read the titles / descriptions of the competing sites and
to think, how could you improve your texts.

Ok guys,

Since I've only got 10 visitors/day I have nothing to lose so I'm going to reveal my all-so-precious niche.

If you are interested, just go to google and type: "rechargeable electric toothbrush" with or without quotes, I'm no1 on both searches.

As you can imagine, it's an Amazon affiliate site selling toothbrushes. The site design, as you will see, is totally crappy but this should not influence my CTR rate from google.

So the site description under my title states: "Latest models and customer reviews! Find the Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush that you are looking for." Do you really think that this is what's wrong and this is why 27.000 k people are ignoring my site?? It's hard for me to believe that.

I think that only about 390 people search for the term 'rechargeable electric toothbrush' each month and that about 300 of them ( 76 %) choose to click on my link.

Of course, after making it public here the traffic will surge to an all time best of 30-40 unique visitors....that should get my heart pumping ))))

Anyway, thank you for all the suggestions and encouragements.
The main thing is that we should all learn something form this. I know I have

Yup, look at exact phrase searches, take returned volumes with large pinch of salt, and also consider that numer 1 gets over 40% of the clicks and the rest pick up the scraps.

Its a learning curve everyone goes through., and that's not taking into account the mistakes people make with local search volumes, personalised search and global versions of Google....

Not 100% true. The BROAD match has a meaning also. Gives an idea of what to expect when your website becomes large and with lot of traffic. The BROAD is a number that represent a future time and ammount.

Hi Mrsparrow, congrats on reaching #1 spot.

There are two other hiccups I noticed on your situation (on top of the [exact match] low traffic main problem):
1 - The spot where #1 usually is has a bunch of graphics from shop search, that will distract a lot of searchers.
2 - The first string of the description looks spammy --> "Latest models and customer reviews!", the "!" actually drives people away. The description needs more work. Take a look at the #2 from ciao.co.uk.

Hope this helps, good luck on on your adsense quest.

Though it says that there are 1000 searches per month, number of searches won't be exactly at that amount. There might be variations. Since your site appears on 6th position, the proportion of the visitors that is coming through searches will be less.

What you can do is find some long tail keywords or keywords related to your main keyword which has a decent number of searches per month and also less competition. Then you can write an informative article on each keyword and post it. Do basic on-page optimization and with a little bit of effort from link building you can get more visitors to your site.

Yet To Come....

VERY interesting, i will tell you more:

First:

1) NEVER use broad match. EVER. In Adwords or in keyword research

2) Phrase for this is (global) 1627 daily which is actually surprisingly HIGH
3) Exact is only 24

This means that the majority of people are probably looking for something like
[BRAND NAME] rechargeable electric toothbrush or some derivative of the keyword because the exact KW does almost get no searches.

Classic example of a mistake made in keyword research, but i am honest, i am also always using phrase....but i think this example very nicely shows what can happen sometimes.

Ok..did some quick research:

Many people looking for "oral b", "pulsonic", "braun" etc...so the 1627 daily searches all include those longer phrases with the brand in it.

Now, as for suggestions to save this site :

What i would do: I would make categories on the site with the brand names. Use all of the major brands your keyword software gives you, oral b, philips, braun etc....etc...

Move the products into those categories.

Retitle the posts, eg. for some braun toothbrush you name it "Braun rechargeable electric toothbrush" w/ exact model number . make sure that the brand also appears in title.Maybe rewrite product descriptions also. Simply make MORE SPECIFIC product pages.

Keep main page general, you ALREADY made it #1 for the general term, so you might be able to pull it off. Google might index your new product pages then and you might rank for oral b vitality precision clean rechargeable electric toothbrush or whatever people are looking for.
You can check amazon for the exact models.
