What Problems do you see with Longtail Keyword Phrases?

Is it because they do not generate enough traffic or the quality of the traffic is not that good?

Why don't people use more longtail keyword phrases?

I am curious as to the varying reasons.

A lot of marketers do use longtails. I'm not sure where you got the idea that they don't.

And you can't really decide about the quality of longtail traffic on a blanket basis any more than you can shorttail. Totally depends on what your goal is with that traffic.

longtail keyword research is not *that* easy. (most keyword tools dont really support or return long tails). Usually, long tails are ultra-high targeted, that's basically the whole reason you want them.

aka. "used cars" versus "where to get a cheap used volkswagen in the pittsburgh area"

Um... savvy marketers always use longtail keyword phrases, especially if they're paying for their ads via PPC. And even if they're not.

What gave you the idea they didn't?

Here's a tip: in addition to looking for longtail phrases on the keyword tools, brainstorm your own.

All keyword data is historical; your aim should be to understand your audience so well that you know which keywords/ phrases they'll use, because of what's happening in a particular industry.

I agree, most savvy marketers know the value of the longtail and that going straight for the major terms can be a mistake.
I think a lot of newbs try the broad phrases because they see the search numbers and envision millions of visitors if they can just reach the top.
In reality, by gaining and owning the longtails you are building your authority for the major keywords for your niche which will someday hopefully bring you to the top for those.

I guess you misunderstood me.

I agree you guys and I personally use them. But I was wondering why is this concept of the longtail is so hard to convey to some newbies?

In a couple of forums I participate in, there are some who don't even try and ultimately give up. Their attempts have been focussed on search volumes around 2,400 or more in a Global Monthly Search (Google) and they get frustrated when they don't see it.

I know the benefits of longtail keywords but what would be the Cons that would make someone think that longtails are not enough?

I use long-tailed KWs - that way I can get targeted traffic - plus, I'm always on the first page.

I think you already answered this yourself.

Newbies are newbies.

They don't understand the importance of long-tail traffic or are too wrapped up wanting to be #1 for viagra that they don't realize the amount of traffic they are missing out on with free viagra for albino midgets.
