Do search engines pick up the text within an iframe?

Not if the text in the iframe is located on another site. The search engines will index the content, but they will index it for the site in the iframe, not the site serving up the iframe.

Yes, they pick up the text. But they index it to the page that is being pulled in. You are better of creating the content on your page if you want the SEO benefit from the content.
