I submitted one of my sites to Yahoo and instantly got a big boost in ranking - IMO better and longer-lasting than I would get out of 60 articles.

While there may be something to be said as to the effectiveness of a large quantity of backlinks, I think it is far more important (and beneficial) to look at the quality of your backlinks. Yahoo's directory is not only a quality directory to be listed in, but also provides a quality backlink so the money is well worth it IMO.

One link.....nahh

I'd spend $299 on PPV advertising, or PPC ads and build a list with it.

299$ to get list on yahoo is too expensice. with this amount you can do a lot better if you will invest it wisely in something else such as link building and writting good content.

and if your reall want links from yahoo than go for yahoo answers.

Every one talked about the value of the backlink. What about the benefit of actaully been in yahoo directory and getting traffiic that way?

From my understanding, the backlink is just a bonus. The real value is in directory traffic.

I think Yahoo should reconsider about the payment option now. Since Google is providing most of its services (Indcluding Dmoz Submission) free, Yahoo should also extend its support to the users for free.

Yahoo directory is valuable. It is valued by Google because even though you pay for your submission yahoo directory will still evaluate your site if it is reasonable for accepting it will not accept your link and that is what Google wants.

Yeah, you can already submitted your website to lot of directories out there in that amount but the question is. Are they valuable? Some directories will automatically accept your link when you have paid for it but that is nothing to Google. They don't give value on that kind of submission.

Wow. I read above that Yahoo will not give your money back if you do not get in their directory. I wouldn't risk paying and then not getting my money back.

But Yahoo does get a lot of traffic. And many posters here feel it is worth it to them. Maybe after hanging out here on the Warrior Forum for awhile I will be doing so well I will have this kind of "extra" money. :-) Then I might try it.

That is true. You are not paying for the listing per se. You are paying for a human to review your site to see if it is worthy of being listed in their directory. So bottom line is if you don't have a site you are proud of and are not certain it is of high quality then it may not be advantageous to pay for the review.

I got a site listed in Yahoo & DMOZ and ranked #1 for the keyword I was after (not long tail, but fairly competitive) in a week.

It has stayed there since then.

If you read the google support forums for AdWords sometimes people from Google end up answering questions around SEO.

The general answer is that they will continue to use human reviewed directories like Yahoo & DMOZ until their testing shows it hurts their results.

So there you go - quality directories like DMOZ & Yahoo are being factored into the SERP rankings.
