Just saw another thread where there was some confusion about all the different terms to learn in search engine optimization. It can be very overwhelming. However once you forget about all the different techniques and their names SEO is really not rocket science. It all comes down to three concepts. A) What I call Relevance Juice - all this has do with is having relevant content. Google and search engines always want to make sure they get the best results for searchers. Relevance is both measured on your page by looking for search terms and words associated with those terms and off your page in the words (anchor text) that people use to link to you. B) Link juice. This all has to do with the amount of links back to your site and its pages and the quality of those links. Are the links from a site that google ranks or doesn't rank highly , are the links in content or just say on a footer. C) Authority - Does Google view your site as an authorty site that should be trusted, You'll notice wikipedia is an authority site. Google selects wikipedia articles highly in many search results. Its the one thing you can't do anything short term to affect. You can fix your content and you can create links but it really takes time and a good deal of reputable content to be viewed as an authority domain. See, Not so hard? Get great content for the terms you want to get ranked for (paying attention to tags and title and the name of your page and even your domain). Get good links back to your site and as many as you can and then trust one day you'll be an authority site (and even if you are never viewed a such you will still rank high on tons of keyword related searches) . The rest of SEO? Thats just the nitty gritty details of those three (and most of the time only the first two). Sometimes worthless details too. So even simpler for the newbie site owner - Get backlinks and get great relevant content. |

| You forgot onsite seo... :P A good little tip I caught onto when I was new, find SEO companies and see the bundle packages they offer. Don't buy them obviously but they tell you basically what to do.

| I really agree with that. On-page SEO does a lot for me, so I can really understand the importance of it.

I am fairly new to SEO and has been realizing how important content is for any website, not only for search engines, but also for your visitors. Everyone loves useful content and this is key to a successful website.

| Nope. Didn't forget it at all. Relevance Juice is 90% or more what on page SEO is about. Having the right terms for your keyword in your title, in your H2 tags, even navigation etc is all about having a page that is relevant to your search terms and to the people looking for what your site covers.

I would like to ask a question that I am having a little trouble understanding lately. If there is an ecommerce type site or a site with just pictures and affiliate links to amazon, I see some of them ranking higher than some well written pages that have almost equivalent off page seo factors. I know that there are some really unanswerable questions with google but can you share your opinion on how something like this with no actual content could rank higher?

The power of backlinks. What I referred to as Link Juice. Sometimes the sheer number or quality of backlinks can override the content issue. google sees a number of other site referencing that site with those keywords and factors it a relevant page. | |
